Knocking noise,help identify (video)
Hey guys,So i hear this mostly while idling, and when the clutch is pressed. I can hear it best when i move with my steering wheel.I think it might be clutch/tranny issue, not sure where it comes from exactly but when i move my camera close to gear lever it knocks louder as showon in the vid.
Please turn on speakers as much as possible its quiet : thanks for any input ! |

It sounds like it changes with idle speed and dissipates when the idle increases. It sounds like flywheel chatter but I usually only hear this when the clutch is in (pedal up).
OMG it's a rod bearing!!!!! I keed I keed .... (paranoia is in right now)

For the moment I've no idea what the knocking noise could be...
Because the cam was inside the car ! OP.. do you hear the knocking noise also close on the front driver side wheel , when you rev it slowly to about 3K rpm ?

Interesting! I JUST took my M (2008) for the first time since storage (I only put 500 miles between purchase and storage) and I noticed the knocking while sitting at idle just about 20 minutes ago. Of course, my instinct was to freak out about rod bearings, which would be insane since I'm currently 9979 miles.
Anyway, as soon as I pressed in the clutch, the noise went away...I'm guessing this is the same issue. Luckily, BMW gave me a crazy extended warranty...so, I'll be calling tomorrow! |

My '08 sounds just like that. Can't be a rod bearing b/c my last oil analysis was spot-on. The flywheel is definitely more audible than most.

I hear the same sound from any model year 6MT, it's not limited to the 08 run.

The reason you can hear it best when you turn the steering wheel is that the power steering pump causes the engine speed to rise and fall and its at low rpm that the noise is most obvious. That it makes the noise with the clutch in, tends to rule out the flywheel (I thought you were pushing the clutch pedal in and out).
I think you should have the car looked at - see if any codes are being shown - just to be safe. EDIT: I see you have had this problem before: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...hlight=exhaust Did the shop not fix it last time? Last edited by SenorFunkyPants; 03-30-2015 at 03:23 AM.. |

The noise is most obvious when the revs dip as you turn the steering wheel and the power steering pump draws power from the engine. The noise disappears when the ECU compensates by raising the rpms .
So it could be: 1. Normal - unlikely but possible. 2. The power steering pump is making the noise - can't imagine how. 3. Worn/broken engine mount - any knock/clunk/thump when you go from off throttle to full throttle when driving? 4. Combustion related - plug/coil/injector. 5. A function of doing the exhaust mod - not refitted correctly? 6. something else. |

I know that my 6MT seems loud especially when in neutral and the clutch pedal is not depressed. Is this when you are hearing the sound?
I was under the impression that the 6MT is somewhat loud and clunky (forgive my lack of technical terms or knowledge).
