Every time I think about some kid buying a $70k sports car and not insuring it for collision............I just can't. I just can't even think about it. It is so mind bogglingly insane.

Don't you have to have insurance and present it to the dealer when purchasing the car and signing loan papers?

well, sort of. as in that thread, he had liability insurance, not collision (so his insurance pays if he hurts you, but doesnt pay for damage to his own car)

interestingly, in a screen capture on that other thread, the kid describes himself as lacking insurance.

This it's the same kid from Lups post, his parents got the car for him he crash that car back in December no insurance not a week ago like he said, that it's why he took the post down.

Yup. I talked with the dude doing the estimated at the dealership, he said about 70k. Kid had had it for 1.5 weeks or something according to the service guys I talked with.

The sad thing was, they were so sure it was mine till they saw the dct.

Exactly! He had insurance but only liability. Thats still insurance AFAIK

Liability is the minimum requirement in most western countries. Cheaper to pay but you only have third party cost covered in an accident.

Yes, I know - it is absolutely insurance (hence the 'sort of' as opposed to 'no' - i was being a bit coy/understated with my language - maybe too understated!).

What i was really trying to get at is twofold: as the driver said, he doesnt have insurance for this kind of accident (to cover his own damage)

AND, more fundamentally, it isnt remotely sufficient insurance for a brand new 70k car. We have the same minimum insurance coverage here (liability only, i think the bare minimum is 200k) but i cant ever imagine having less than full collision and at least $1 MM in liability. I guess if i paid $500 for a beater i might skip the collision, but even then at least $1 MM in liability....injuries and damages to others are expensive!

If the insurance here is anything like I remember it in the UK, "fully comprehensive" insurance for a car of this value and known performance would be astronomical for a 19 yr old. That being said, his parents did buy him a $70K car, so you wouldn't think cost was an option.

Reminds me of those people who won't claim they won't buy a Ferrari because it uses too much gas

In the UK I remember three main insurance levels that seem to match closely with what I have heard here:

1) Third party only (liability)
2) Third party, fire and theft
3) Fully comprehensive (includes collision)

Much cheaper to get third party only, but you better not toast it, or have someone toast you. That's why the insurance people price the way they do!
