Try a different USB cable and a different phone? You have to reproduce the steps with different items to make sure it's not your BMW USB input that is faulty.

It happens on both mine and my wife's phones. Tried two different cables. I suspect it is the port's fault. Is it a common problem or is it just with my x5?

I found this thread with your exact issue. Read through it and report back : http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=737048.

That happened to me twice.
First, like a month ago, I was using s belkin lightning cable and it just stopped working...I got s message in my iPhone "this is not a certified accesory and can't be used.." , tried the same cable with wall charger and it didn't work anymore.

Second time, 2 days ago...using genuine apple cable, started on and off usb like crazy...I unolugged and reset iPhone (holding power and home button at the same time until apple logo dissapears and iPhone remains turned off) and it worked perfect again.

I'm running into this a lot currently. Are you, by any chance, running a "pre-release" version of iOS (for developers) on your phone?

I get the on/off issue on both mine and my wife's iPhone 6 running the latest official firmware. I might be wrong but I get the feeling it a USB port issue. The port seems flimsy.

The issue happens to me again yesterday....but just once...and I didn't have a chance to see if it lasts longer because I was 5 blocks away from home...

I have the same problem, iPhone 6 IOS8, when streaming music the USB symbol goes off the screen and all i have to do to reactivate it is to press the media button and the music comes right back. It happens sporadically but enough to be annoying, having said that I am ignoring the issue for now.
