getting the car into neutral...
Shame on me for not telling my wife to fill up with gas when distance till empty was close to 0 as she ran out of gas. We got stuck on the road and I had to go to a gas station that was 100 ft away and buy portable container and fill up the car with 1gallon of gas and then drive in and fill up the rest of the tank. All this in subzero temps instead of putting the car in neutral and pushing it to the station. However, I could not figure out how to put the car into neutral. She has 2015 F15 X5 50.
I did a lot of searching on forums but could not find anything specific to F15 as what was suggested for other models did not work when I tried it after the fact. Any help will be greatly appreciated. |

Thank you, r33.
To make sure it actually works, is there a way to try it without repeating the "out of gas" experience? If the car has gas, as soon as you press brake pedal and press Start/Stop, the car will start and no issues putting it in Neutral. Thank u. |

Car was full tank, but kept on cranking and engine doesn't want to fire up.

On Bimmerfest, someone spotted this loose bolt in the transmission, close to the driver door (LHD):
One of the responses is that this bolt allows you to shift into Neutral when there is no power. You have tighten it until it is flush. Actual response: "The bolt is for the park overide so your vehicle can be moved if battery is dead or you are having a malfunction of your shifter. You screw it all the way in till it bottoms out lifting the lever connected to the parking pawl inside transmission. The vehicle will stay locked in neutral till bolt is back out." My apologies for resurrecting this topic. I tried finding this screw on both my wife's f15 x5 50 and my f10 550. No luck.
This is kinda crazy, not being able to put the car into neutral without starting the engine. How does towing work when they need to get the car onto the flatbed? It has to be in neutral... Any suggestions? |

Looks like the older X5's came with a special tool that you'd use to turn a nut located underneath the left cupholder.

Here is the response I got from the experienced service advisor, Cesar, at Knauz BMW in Lake Forest, IL:
"I spoke to my shop foremen, the only way to get both those car (f15 x5 and f10 550) into neutral would be by removing the under panels and getting it from under the car. Not something that is easily done." |

It is still hard to believe that tow truck operator will be doing this on the street, without a lift, when the car needs to be towed. Unless they have a some kind of trick with putting the car on the rollers, or something... |

I'm thinking of taking the shield off now and drilling an access hole so I can get to the transmission screw without removing the shields in the field
