Ice cold arm rest and center console

It's really cold here in NY and at highway speed that cold comes right into my M3 cabin via the center console area. Combine that with aluminum trim and it's like putting your hand into a freezer. Did they remove insulation to save weight? I would prefer the weight. 335is was nothing like this. Thank goodness for the magnificent heated steering wheel.

This might be stating the obvious, so apologies in advance, but did you adjust the two vents in the center?

It seems that you haven't.

Creature comforts happen to be more important to me than exhaust notes. This appears to be a design flaw in M3. (Yes heat vents are adjusted).

We've got the same cold weather here in MI and I can't say I've noticed this effect in my car. So you feel code air coming up from inside the console storage area, or am I misunderstanding? I wonder if your aluminum trim could somehow be amplifying the effect vs. the carbon fiber trim?

Now admittedly, I rarely remove my right hand from the wheel, so that could be why I don't notice it as well. Though I don't have a heated wheel either. I do have my vents on the dash angled toward the wheel however, and I also close off the others in the car so all air is directed through just those vents (well, and the floor vents).

Also, check to make sure that your center vent on the dash is not set to the "Cold" setting rather than the "Hot" setting. It's the little dial with the red and blue coloring beside it.

I was sitting on the train thinking about my life. But then I read about the problem this poor OP has to endure every winter morning in NY and suddenly I realized I have nothing to complain about. Some people have it way worse.

I hope you can find the fortitude to tough it out over the next couple weeks buddy. Dig deep and don't let that cold air beat you! I'll be cheering for ya.

try adjusting the rear passenger heater vents to hot. shouldn't be an issue.

Ok, I'll try to be more helpful then. Where exactly is the cold air coming from?

Couldnt you say the same about anyone having problems with their new M3/M4? This whole forum is about First World issues!

Cold air is coming through the center console storage area + all along the center console including the DCT gearshift area. An actual gentle breeze between seams. I use the gear to shift (I just like it vs. the more efficient paddles) but have switched to paddles because of the cold. The little wheel is on hot and yes I think the aluminum trim amplifies the cold effect.

This cold air - along with the wonderful unmuffled sound of sand and pebbles rattling around make me feel that there is nothing between me and the road except for a thin sheet of metal. Nothing like this in 4 previous Bimmers.

To those who have exPressed concern for me ...thank you. My life is still in good shape and I absolutely love the car.

yeah that doesn't sound normal. it is insulated normally. maybe they left a part out at the factory. wouldn't be the first time it happened. have dealer take a look at it. maybe they can give you a 4 series loaner so you can see the difference.

My kiddo just asked why I turned into a red, laughing mess. My answer was that he really should try to date ladies when he's older.

Op thank you, you made my morning. I know as well as anyone here how annoying a little thing like that can be, and I agree completely with the first world problem forum.

I would also like yo say that if the engineer in charge of the heated steering wheel ever reads this, please know all of us wussies love you, very very much.

Once he figures out a way to warm up the back of my hand with the steering wheel heater on, then I'll join you in this little lovefest.

wish I had a heated steering wheel and seat in the race car. even in may in germany could be near freezing temperatures. comfort is important in an endurance race!

I doubt anything is leaking in from the console area. It is more like just cold spots where the heat hasn't gotten a chance to mix yet. It was -18F here a couple of mornings ago here and I felt what you are talking about. I just move my hand to a warmer spot in the car. After 10-15 minutes of driving the heat gets a chance to mix better and I no longer feel it. When it is this cold out you just have to give the car longer to warm up.

wonder if I should make a thread about the associated discomfort with having to sit on cold seats to start the car up so that I can set everything to warm up.
