Aluminum Doors?

Ive read a few articles (Car & Driver, etc) that say the F8x has Aluminum doors, but I don't see that same information on the BMWNA website, so just for grins I tried one of my old track magnets on the doors and stuck right to it.

Can anyone confirm the door material? I'm sure the crash beams are steel so that magnet may not be accurate

From what I've heard, I beleive the only Aluminum is the hood, so the doors are steel??

Hood and wheel flares are aluminum. Interesting...I reviewed the official spec booklet from BMWAG, and it does not specify the material composition of the doors.

There isn't much about the doors or safety features...will investigate.

Somebody just needs to put a magnet on them. Aluminum hoods and doors are notorious for not allowing magnetic track car numbers to stick to them.

The OP said he did that...

Reading comprehension is not my strong suit...

In any case, that's all we need to know. No mention of the doors being made up of aluminum, coupled with the fact that they're non-ferrous, screams that they're steel.

I'd believe a magnet over C&D.

Pretty sure they are steel. The beams are narrow, so if the magnet sticks to all portions of the door, they are steel.

F82 uses the exact same steel doors as the F32 (Identical part numbers)
F80 uses the exact same steel doors as the F30 (Identical part numbers)

I was curious about this as well, so surfacing this thread from the depths with some evidence for all of us:

Front fenders & hood are aluminum (duh)
F80 front and rear doors are steel
F80 rear quarter panels are steel.

Actually the front fenders are plastic/carbon I believe

Thank you. I was buying a magnetic track number and wasn't sure if the magnet would work.

They work on the door. I got the bigger NASA compliant ones and they don't come off at triple digits speeds.

Be very careful about damaging the paint underneath. Pretty much inevitable.

Car Detail spray, plenty of microfiber towels, and alcohol should be a part of every track kit. Or I simply put the numbers on after a car wash and keep them on until after race day. I always wipe down the back of the magnets with alcohol and a fresh microfiber cloth. Let dry for a few seconds, then apply before any dirt/dust/debris accumulates.

Lets be honest though, I think the rock chips from going off-roading have done much more damage than the car numbers! I know my passenger side covers up one of the bigger rock chips from when I was just using painter's tape!

You just have me an idea: put masking tape below the area where the number plate goes!? Shouldn't effect the strength too much.
