Lightbulb Dash Cams

So has anyone thought about installing a running dash cam on your car? I am thinking about doing this to have some piece of mind when things "happen."

Any thoughts?

EDIT: 4/17/15
As many of you know I started this thread a while ago and I invested in a BlackVue DR650GW 2CH. I was recently backed into by a Nissan Frontier while at a Family Get Together.

Here's pictures of the damages and the video captured by the Dash Cam. It was 5000 dollars worth of damage. (Yes, the video was good enough to capture the license plate. I did not post a picture of it out of respect for the other driver. In addition, the video quality is much poorer on youtube than the original video file.)

Thinking about doing more really soon! Just don't know too many and what is good haha. Also the thought of having to hardwire it and have it end up draining the battery of the car is putting me off a little.

But even if you hardwire it, like a radar detector for instance, wouldn't battery drainage be extremely minimal?

I've always had my radar detectors hardwired, even in my other previous cars (all Honda Accords), and not once did I ever notice any effects from battery drainage.

I installed my mini 0803 by tapping power from the mirror along with my radar detector.

Dash cam turns on automatically when you start the engine and turns off automatically when you turn off the engine. No battery drain at all. Plus the Mini0803 has its own internal battery anyway.

Here is a sample video, Watch it in HD (Youtube degrades the video, it looks even better on my computer)

Also caught the tech at my BMW dealership joy riding my car during my 1200 mile service.

Wow, I'm sold just for the tech video. What did you do about that? Obviously he didn't act too stupid but I'd be playing that for the service manager and GM and asking for/demanding a free tank of gas and maybe even a tire protection package or something.

This is known as the best dash cam in the world because of it's price point and it works well:

$58 bucks, and they have good support
I bought mine at Spytech but here is another link for you.
http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-dash-cam/

Of course there are better/badder cams usually in the $120-$250 range you find the best.

Gabe the mini 0803 is generally considered better than the g1w. Both are good but the mini 0803 is more compact which is very important to me.I don't want people to know I have a dash cam.

I did nothing. He didn't go crazy with the car so I let it slide. Just happy I got it on video.

Yeah it really wasn't awful. Don't think he even red lined it. Very cool that you got it.

Yeah I know the mini is a better cam, GPS option and internal memory says it all.
The Garmin is only considered the best cam by the review websites because of it's price point.

Kinda wish he was driving on better roads then in Downtown -_-. Non-stop bumps and dips. Oh well. I expect my tech to do the same when I hit 1200. Atleast he will know if it's running proper or not LOL. Anytime before the 1200 mark is unacceptable.

I really like the BlackVue due to how small and discrete it is, but it's definitely pricey over the G1W.

Alright... so post of links and reviews? I am convinced I need to get one. I would prefer to have one that's running continuously on loop and also has the rear as well.

Can you post the Amazon link for the mini 0803 model you got? There seems to be quite a few variations. Also, how is the installation like?

Front & Rear: http://www.blackboxmycar.com/product...nglish-version

Reviews: Google , but here's a start. However, I'd bet that blackboxmycar.com is biased towards the products they sell (i.e., take with a grain of salt).

Just spoke with Alex at Blackboxmycar today and order the dual Blackvue set up today. Installation seems pretty easy. I wanted front and rear cameras. I am in the insurance business and have had several customers this year have claims where video evidence would have been very helpful including a claim when a car backed into my customer at a light and claimed they were rearended. Hope it works as advertised.

The Panorama X2 seems to be the latest and greatest.

Personally, I have a Cowon AW2 hardwired in my daily beater. It has a parking mode that is triggered by motion detection and comes standard with an internal battery voltage detection circuit. It also turns off if the temperature exceeds 140 °F.

It has been installed for maybe six months so far, with no problems with battery drainage. The peace of mind that it gives is great, though nothing ever happens once you set up a camera system.

A good forum for more information is dashcamtalk.com

Who's done a DIY thread on this and the best way to wire a camera in? I am a little scared to tamper with my new M.

Victor, there are ones that have motion detectors and record even if the car is off.

Viciouz, just follow the DIY for installing a radar detector in the DIY section. Pretty much the same process.
