Diagnostic tool/programmer

Hello everyone

So I am planning on keeping my M3 for a very long time with old school maintenance as with all our BMWs. Shopping for an OBD2 scan tool that will work for my 2012 M3 but also for our other BMWs-2007 M6 cabrio, 2013 535i xDrive M sport and 2009 328i xDrive Coupe. Want something that will be able to reset service functions for example, allow battery registration, Valvetronic reset(N52 valve cover diy), and maybe allow coding as you could do at the dealer?

Was looking at AutoEnginuity with BMW pack as I believe it can do it all except coding? Also could work for other cars? Any other somewhat reasonable cost tools out there? Looking to avoid the dealer as much as possible!

Thanks

Check out BMWhat. Can do everything you're looking for and it's continually being updated.

A Bavarian Technic tool would work well for you, but you'd need the professional model, which runs $735. The cable can perform all of the functions you listed.

The BMWhat website. Amazon has them too.

Assuming you are inquiring about the wifi model because you have a iPhone?

If you have an apple device, you would have to use the wifi adapter.
For Android devices you would use the Bluetooth adapter.

It's highly recommended to purchase their branded adapter as they claim 100% compatibility to the features in the app.

Currently it cannot show parameters for the S65 YET. I have been in communication with the author of the app and they asked to send them a "session log" so they can add it in. Again, this is another feature that requires their branded adapter.

Torque can't show oil temp but can show voltage and manifold pressure

Want to see if it will code my heated mirrors to turn on. Wonder if the previous owner deactivated when activating the rear fogs. Passenger mirror also doesn't tilt in reverse no matter where the switch is.

I'll go out and check the coding options regarding the mirrors for you this afternoon. Unfortunately, you have to plug into the car to see the options. In my talks with them, I suggested offline coding and they said they would look into it!

I suppose they could have disabled the mirrors.. But why?
Coding is not needed to enable the rear fogs. The switch just needs to be modified.

Just checked.. There is the option to enable/disable tilt in reverse but didn't see the option for heated mirrors.

I'm curious because in all my other BMWs the mirrors would defrost in seconds. And the other day my M3s mirrors were frozen. I've read a few different sources that they came standard with heated mirrors so idk now haha

Has anyone compared BMWhat against Bavarian Tech? What are the pros/cons to each?

I have an Apple device and a Win laptop, so I could go either way. At first glance, BMWhat seems like a cheaper solution with more features (coding) over Bav Tech.

Am I missing something?

So got the app and dongle and played with it a bit. Does this allow new battery registration?

Yes but for Android only. It will be available for Apple users "in an update early 2015".

It also allows you to CODE the size and type of battery.

Edit: i just realized it sounds like I work from them.. I do not! I'm just knowing the answers lol. I've also had communication with them lately and battery registration was one of my inquiries. To prove I do not work for them I will say they are are not coding the battery type and size correctly lol. They are coding the FRM which works but the correct way is to CODE the Vehicle Order number. If you ever get the car updated at the dealer, they will default all the coding to the VO including the battery specs. You'll have to fix it again to the battery specs you installed. No biggie but worth mentioning. I would recommend keeping the same battery as originally installed anyway.
