2011 M3 with 2 months left of warranty...

My car only has 26k miles but the 4 years are almost up. Should i sell it now or enjoy it a little more? Will the car devaluate a lot after my factory warranty is over? Im eventually planning to trade it in for a SUV but not ready yet.
TIA for the advice!

When I was checking out the new M4 at the dealership, my SA told me that these kind of cars depreciate really fast after warranty. If you really like the car i would say buy the extended warranty. But if you are trading it in the end just trade it in before warranty expires.

Nothing personal ///S65 but that sounds like BS from a salesperson trying to sell you a new M4!!! But having said that, the cars have been solid overall but it doesn't take much to make ownership expensive. If you are comfortable with that, keep the car. Personally I bought an extended warranty for my E90 for $3k and am covered for the next three years. Might never use but worth the piece of mind to me.

Out of warranty worries to me are overblown. The car probably will run fine up to 100k or more miles if it has been trouble free up to 30k and you maintain it properly. Then if it does break at some point just fix it. If you can afford a $70k car you should be able to come up with a few thousand to fix anything that breaks. If you just like a new every three years then trade it out but don't do it just because of warranty expiration.

My warranty is out 1/27/15. I just got my fuel injectors replaced last week for free at the dealer because it hit whatever mileage it is. I'm at 33,000 miles. You are going to want to take your car in and get some free work done.

The salesman told me the E92 is better than the F80.

$3k ONLY???
What does that cover?

I'm piggy-backing off this thread since I'm in the same situation, just not thinking SUV, lol.

"You are going to want to take your car in and get some free work done." They won't do free work unless the car has a problem.

I would not own one w/o an extended warranty. BMW will only extend while still under factory warranty, but best I could get for my 2011 was 2 years/75k total miles for $6,200. There are drive train only warranties and every things covered warranties.

If you are original owner and car has never had issues I might take a chance. I did that on my Porsche Cayene and the thermostat went and costs me $2,200!

My car is financed through PenFed (1.49% APR, lol), and after reading a bunch of positive reviews from bimmerpost and having a few friends recommend it, I went with their Route 66 coverage. They bundled it along with my remaining balance, $1995 for 5 years until 100K miles. I've put 24K miles on the car in the last 3 years, so this is perfect for me.

ITEMS NOT COVERED: Any normal maintenance item including tires,
wheels, struts, shocks, brake shoes or pads, rotors or drums, belts, hoses,
filters, fluids, lubricants, clutch, pressure plate or clutch release bearing,
tune-up items. Exhaust or emission parts, sound reproduction components,
lighting, wiring harness, telephone, clock, television, navigation equipment.
Any body parts, interior parts, trim, glass, paint, air bag system, keyless
entry/anti-theft.

I'm mainly concerned about AC (evaporator), DCT (only known issue are low-cost gasket leaks, but in any more serious cases they unfortunately don't service/repair the transmission so it's always a big expense), and engine (bearing issue is probably overhyped, but with 5 years of warranty coverage, I don't care... if it blows, I get a brand new engine). Anything else that goes that isn't covered, I can replace with better aftermarket stuff.

So the extended warranty for 2 years was $6,200!?!
That is crazy for a car of it's age/mileage.

(from memory) BMW classifies cars from A-H, with A having the cheapest warranty and H the most expensive. The M3 was classified as a G so more expensive. My 2009 BMW 650i was $4,200 for the same coverage. This was platinum, the Gold drivetrain coverage was less. Also, some dealers will sell for a $500 discount.

Penfed is great (both my cars financed through them) but you have to be military like USAA.

I paid $6600 for 100K 7years platinum program from BMW, you have to be careful with third party coverage many items will not be included when it comes to repair.

Not true in my case. Perhaps with some fly-by-night warranty companies. You just have to know what you're getting into. Even the BMW warranty has some limitations. Read the fine print and don't overpay :/

I always find it an odd selling tactic from BMW - "the BMW you have now will depreciate rapidly after warranty because everyone knows that BMW break often after 48k and cost $1000's every time ". So - let us solve that for you by selling you another car with (likely more risk in the case of F80) same issues.
OR...How about someone go look at a brand that has a better Total Cost of ownership. Reliability.

Having said that - I think the e9x is generally very reliable. My e90 has been absolutely issue free.

You don't have to be military to get financing from Penfed, they give you multiple ways to qualify. All I had to do was create a credit union bank account with them, and deposit $5 into it, and I was qualified.

This is a sales tactic, because it sounds verbatim to what my SA told me. "Oh, you don't want to trust those other warranties even though we sell them, because with our warranty we will just replace it while they will want to check it out and examine it. You know, just like we advertise M cars with all this track-oriented material, but god forbid we ever find out you went to the track in one of our cars."

In reality, well-established companies like Easycare or Route 66 will rarely send out an inspector, and if they do, they will just ensure that the problem you are reporting is actually there, and will not be giving you a hard time about mods or nitpicking your warranty claim. Meanwhile, BMW will examine every nook and cranny of that car, and try to find any reason to turn you down. Every day I hear or read horror stories about BMW NA. I've had a dealership turn me down for servicing a loose EDC sensor because I have "aftermarket wheels". And this is under original factory warranty.

$6600 for 3 years of coverage? I guess that's why BMW gets away with all the bullshit they pull, most of their customer base are clueless yuppies with no sense for judging value.

I got a hardtop and don't want to take my chances with any major repair beside plan to keep the car much longer.
