Is Costco gas considered Top Tier? - Look at this Pic.
Hey E90 Nation,
I normally always use only Shell/Chevron for my M3. However every now and then if I'm in a pinch and am at a Costco I'll fill 'er up there, but that's probably like 1 out of every 100 fills. However today I saw this sign posted above the pumps. Is Costco gas now considered Top Tier just like Shell and/or Chevron? |

I just noticed the signs as well locally. To claim Top Tier, they are audited by the industry group's independent auditor to ensure they've added the correct amount of detergents in the base stock of gasoline. So the answer is yes, Kirkland gas is now Top Tier.
I think there's still differences between Shell, BP, Chevron, Conoco, etc as their combination of detergents are different, but they all meet the Top Tier basic requirements per the testing procedures. |

I've filled up with the new Costco gas and logged timing using the BT tool. Everything looked fine and timing appeared to be pulled less than 76, and about the same as Chevron (maybe slightly less), all 91 octane in CA. If it weren't for the lines, I'd fill up with Costco more often.

Obviously ignorance.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I think the requirements for top tier gas should be re-evaluated. The requirement today is basically if you have xx amount of detergent per gallon, you're considered top tier. Is this really all that matters when determining the best gas? I'm no chemical engineer, but I have to believe the refinement process comes into play too.

If Costco gas is truly Top Tier and pretty much as good as Shell/Chevron, I might start filling up there at all my Costco trips. Currently my regular Shell is about $3.30/Gallon for 91 Premium, Costco was at $3.00 for 91 Premium, so a pretty good price difference per gallon.

Interesting... I too might consider going back. My DD for the last several years has been diesel and our local Costco doesn't carry it, so I would only occasionally fill the wife's car there. Now that she has the diesel and I have has cars to choose from I'm going to consider them back in the mix.
