Quick question..Competition Package=no speed governor?
The owner of the M3 I am picking up in a few weeks said in his ad that it is a Competition Package, and therefore has no speed limiter. Was this a feature for the 2011 ZCP's? I have never read that anywhere, and have searched a few times for this information.

There is a so called M Drivers package that readjust the limit from 250 to 280 (+drivers/track course) Might only be on conjunction with Comp Pack, not sure but mine was ordered with both.

M3's sold in the USA are limited by BMW to 155mph or ~246kph.
Some aftermarket software (I have Dinan) removes the top speed governor. Dinan software also increases the rev limit to 8600 from 8400 with a small increase in horsepower and torque. |

the M driver package I believe is a Europe only option. You get an increased speed limiter and also some M driver training courses on the track. I think it cost $2000 or something like that. I remember it was insanely overpriced for what it offered.
I think it's actually possible to remove the speed limiter yourself if you're well versed in coding |

Thanks for the replies. My car was originally purchased in Germany from a German dealer, and has never been to the US (though it is US Spec, it has been a German car it's whole life) so I thought maybe it might have had the M Drivers package. Just checked the build sheet on the vin decoder website and it looks like it doesn't. Not sure why the owner thought it had it.
No big deal. 155 is fast enough on the Autobahn, and not even achievable on US roads so I'm not at all upset about it. |

When I picked up my E90 M3 in Munich, another US customer was there picking up their E93 M3. They took it out and up to an indicated 169mph while in Germany ...
Not sure I buy the "limited to 155 no matter what for US-bound cars" statement.

Well, you can forget all that. The new car is fitted with a turbocharged straight six. Turbocharging? In an M car? That’s like putting gravy on an ice cream. - Jeremy Clarkson, discussing the S65 and then S55 M3 engines. |

This has been discussed to death, indicated speed isn't the same as real GPS speed. M3 is notoriously ambitious about the speed it shows on speedometer.
