Falling in love with my 135 all over again!
With only six months left on the lease of my black-on-black 2012 135i 6MT Mspt, I began shopping for my next car. An M235 seemed a somewhat logical choice, as did a G37S and a 370Z, both of which I cross-shopped against my 135 2.5 years ago (they obviously lost - the 370Z because I couldn't see out the mail slot rear window and I live in a city where I have to parallel park a lot, and the G37S because despite "similar" numbers it wasn't as fast and it was just too soft).
Anyway, I have spent a lot of time looking for a car I like as much as my 135 and at the same time really taking advantage of my limited time remaining with it (i.e. driving like a hooligan at every (safe) opportunity). Mainly, I want to find all the things I like that I want my next car to have as well as all the things I don't like that I want my next car NOT to have. I've also spent a lot of time looking at it, both the parts I like, and the parts I don't, and... I have fallen in love with her all over again. I have kept her bone stock, both because it is a lease and because I figured that I can always mod when the honeymoon wears off. Needless to say, I haven't felt the need to mod (though at times I wish I had gotten an exhaust upgrade a long time ago just to better hear that gorgeous engine). I have decided that my next car will be...(drumroll)... Another 6MT Msport 135i. I'm not keeping the current one because of a frame-damaging accident (repaired) that BMW won't cut me a deal on and the fact that it will have almost 40k miles on it when I turn it in, but I will be looking for a car basically identical to mine, preferably with under 20k miles to buy for long term love. I can't find another car that I like as much anywhere near the price range. I am falling in love with the lines and shape again (except for the headlights, esp. the orange corners), I am having a blast with the power and handling again, I love its perfect size (no kids and the dogs go in the GF's car), and I love the fact that it is unashamedly different from anything else in the increasingly corporate (boring) BMW lineup. I love that it has a raw feel that nothing else in the current stable has (M3/4 are great, but too "refined" nowadays for my taste). When I get it, I plan on a few tasteful mods: exhaust, maybe a tune, maybe some suspension work (I don't track, so stock later model suspension is fine most days), PSS, etc...and it will be my beloved daily driver until the wheels fall off or the M2 finally coaxes me away (yeah, and while I liked the M235, I don't feel like it's enough of an upgrade to warrant leaving my 1er, and is, in fact, a downgrade in some ways). So in essence, VIVA LA 1er!! |

Good for you! I'm glad you've found a car you like that much, and resisted the temptation to get something new just because it's new!

But I may fall prey to the M2... (but I won't be in a rush to be one of the first ones out the gate- maybe 2-3 years into production). |

Sounds a lot like my story. I cross-shopped the same (and other) cars.
Found a CPO 2013 with 3100 miles (build date 9/2013) and got it for less than a new model of the others on my short list. Pretty much a no-brainer. It's even my first choice in color! Thing is, it's so good, I'm very reluctant to mod it in any way. The thought of me being able to improve something BMW engineers designed just doesn't compute. That said, I wouldn't mind if the exhaust sounded a little more like it does on cold-start... All the time... Hmm... Anyone know if that's doable?

yeah, I've been really happy with the stock model, especially for DD and no tracking. It's not like anybody in their right mind could call the 135 underpowered, but sure, more of a good thing is even better, right?
I'm looking at BMW PS+M3 front control arms and rear subframe bushings, PPK (I like the up-front grunt of the stock, and don't want to change that out for anything more linear across the whole band, because most days I rarely get above 4500RPM - no need to), and exhaust (though I like what I've heard of the CP-E over the BMW PE - PE on the N55 seems to have a bit of a diesel tractor sound where the CP-E sounds more Euro exotic to me). So mild suspension work, PPK and exhaust, and I think I'm golden. Some people would mod a Bugatti, but is it really necessary? |
