BMS Stage 1 - Dyno run

Guys - as promised here is some data and video from my dyno morning at P1 Motorcars in Stamford, CT. First time dyno experience and a great way to spend a Saturday morning. P1 owner Tommy and the guys were great!
The experience of strapping in the car and getting it all ready was cool. BMS Stage 1 was installed 2 weeks ago at 3 PSI.
Note that this was a real hot and a very humid day here in CT so not helpful but P1 had this other connected box the Dyno that accounts and adjusts for the heat and humidity. 89 degree and about 60 % humidity.
1st run was a warm up.
All data to the wheels. And did not do stock run and P1 did not have a stock 2014 M5 run.
2nd run 573 power and 604 Torque
3rd run 555 power and 547 torque but only in 4th gear.
- 155 limiter was getting in the way so he wanted to see max 4th gear.
I thought the BMS stage 1 took the limiter off but not true and a special file is needed from Terry as per P1. You just have to email him.
4th run 564 power and 613 torque
Suggested a 20% power loss through drive train, my best numbers at the crank would be 687 power and 735 torque. Estimates I know..

Buds - that is what I have and had a real fun day.

Alex@Alpine claims he can do it through coding. $200. Ask him about it.

Nice numbers.. How does it feel on the butt dyno. Big difference before and after the tune?

Yeah, in my opinion yes for sure. Butt dyno confirmed and I think worth the few bucks.

Shows the value of a before and after dyno if possible and the variability between different dyno results. Terry posted 637 hp and 613 torque with stage 1 using 93 octane, k & n filters and a can of octane booster on a dynojet.

Did P1 Motorcars suggest a 20% drivetrain loss? Curious as that seem to contradict what they have said on drivetrain losses before...

BTW, I think you did the drivetrain loss calculations backwards...

Drivetrain losses needs to be calculated from crank power, not calculating up from whp.

So, 564whp would equal 705hp at the crank with a 20% drivetrain loss (705 x 0,8 = 564)

I received the supposed limiter removal flash from Alex. I don't have a place to prove that it works. When I find an opportunity to do so, however, should I get a vbox to track the car's speed and use that as "proof"?

We talked about 15-20%. Not sure what the right answer is with the loss.....
Got it on the math, thx.

The Stage1 DOES NOT remove the speed limiter! Only a flash can do that. You should do the runs in 5th gear. 4th gear will report 20-30hp lower as you found out.

If so, that contradicts their own drivetrain loss estimations for the very similar F8x drivetrain in their thread on the F8x forums...

There they expect a 10% drivetrain loss + tire losses, ending up at a maximum of 13-15% IIRC

My vote is that dyno data is good for whp and not crank numbers. Do some vbox quarter miles or go to the strip. I personally think that vbox numbers give the car owner the best chance to get used to their car and produce the best results. It takes practice to run a good quarter with these cars but it's worth the time you spend and it's also fun.

You can have a lot of power but it's useless to you if you can't drive the car with it. So get out there and get some quarter mile times for us to evaluate.

P.S. I have really made good use of my vbox, it was worth the money I spent. I have a better understanding of how conditions play into the results I get. I credit Boss330 with the suggestion to me on getting the vbox before I ever put a mod on my car. Based on my experience it has been a really worthwhile tool to have in the whole process of modding the car for enhanced performance.

OK, which vbox should I buy?

I bought the Performance box because I don't have an iPhone which is what the vbox works with. Brian told me that when he tried to use John's vbox that it wouldn't work with his iPhone. The Performance Box uses suction cups to stick to the inside of the windshield and a 12v lighter type power interface you can stick in the lighter for power. It has an SD card for storage which is what all the point and shoot cameras use and you can get them anywhere for less than $10 for 8gb which is way more than plenty. You also need a USB adapter for that in order to upload the data to a PC and that is about $10.

The Performance Box comes with a disc of software for the PC that allows you to evaluate the runs and plot your data. You can also upload the run files to vboxtools.com and produce the graphs that I always show. The guys with iPhone vbox's usually show their screen. It works either way.

^ This
And I believe 20% loss is too much! I would say 10-15% and with 15%, the hp at crank would be 663HP (564 /0.85)
