New member 2008 E92 M3 price check

Hi,
I'm new to this board and someone suggested I post here for other members thoughts about pricing of an M3 I found at a BMW dealer. It's a 2008 blk/blk 6MT coupe with premium and technology packages and 9000 miles.

Aftermarket add ons are springs, window tinting, Brembo brake kit and Eisenmann exhaust (I think). The dealer put on new factory 19's with new tires because the car apparently was traded in with some aftermarket rims the dealer removed and sold on ebay.

The brakes are causing the tire pressure light to be permanently on and will stay on unless the factory brakes are reinstalled. I don't care a whole about the extra stopping power or the exhaust, but they are nice to haves. The lowering springs, new wheels, and window tinting are things I would have done, so I figured that's worth at least 2k to me. The asking price is $43k but would sell for $41k.

Any thoughts if this is a good deal? With the 11's coming off lease, I'm wondering if I'm better off waiting a bit – but I'd hate to lose out on a cherry 2008.

Thanks in advance.

Rip off. The fact it has 9000 miles may mean less immediate repair, but it's out of warranty so you're footing the repair bill yourself anyway. Mods don't command a premium, and in many cases can decrease the value of the car. To put things in perspective, I picked up mine (loaded e93 6mt) with 50k miles for 39k (including the warranty which takes it to 125k miles and 5 years from purchase).

The brakes have nothing to do with the tire pressure light. They need to check the TPMS system and sensors on each wheel.

Exceptionally low miles does drive up the price. Blue Book it and see what you get. I looked at a 2010 E92 with 6800 miles in March for $49k. Also no warranty. A true garage queen that has been well cared for in every way is worth a few thousand over a typical M3. I usually look for cars in the 20-30k mile range that have been babied and have had Clear Guard type of paint protection applied. These kinds of cars still give a "like new" quality at a more reasonable cost.

I have a hard time believing that the dealer would not have checked the TPMS when installing new wheels. I'll have to call Turner Motor Sports or something.

Exterior mods seem to reduce value given everyone has individual tastes, but light mods like brakes/springs/exhaust don't seem to decrease resale value – they just may not increase the future sale price, so yes, I'd be paying the premium to have them upfront.

I suppose my fear with 30k mile vehicles is accident history. 30k history obviously has a higher likelihood of paintwork than 10k. My current BMW, a 330ci, the local BMW dealer said the car had no paintwork done, but of course it had, and I bought that with 24.5k miles. I'm not an expert in detecting paintwork, and as we all know Carfax/Autocheck does not report all accidents.

ihtfp06 – what year is your car? There seem to be more cars for less in areas outside of the Northeast. I also feel the salespeople in the NYC area are more smarmy.

Blue book ranges from 35k to 42k from KBB, Edmunds, and Nada. Averaging out the values, it comes out to 39.5k. So that tells me the car I'm looking at is about $3500 over what I could probably find another car. For that $3500, I get new tires and wheels, which I would do anyway ($2k), lowered car, which I would do, and some comfort in knowing it's history. Also, I don't drive a whole lot on a yearly basis either – maybe 3k miles/year, so having a low mileage vehicle in the future is somewhat appealing as well.

The bad part is it's out of warranty and it's a first year model in the E92 platform. Not sure what to expect down the road in terms of maintenance cost, but it doesn't seems there's anything crazy that consistently happens with this car like the VANOS or subframe.

The car has a build date of 2/08 if that makes a difference.

Since buying a car is based on luck and probability.....lower miles are the logical choice. To buy a car with higher miles increases the probability of abuse and damage. The lower the miles the lower the probability of abuse and damage....
41k appears to be a fair price for that low a miles....However, you could probably pick up a car for only a couple thousand more and it be newer with no mods....

Here is a great example and Carmax will transfer it to your town, you can drive it for like 5 days and if not interested give it back...

Take off the mods & sell them for ~$5k (or trade for stock parts & $4k) & your into that car for ~$36-37k. A real bargain for a nice 9k mi car, IMO.

Wow, that is a pretty phenomenal deal I would say. 2011, 10k miles, clean carfax for $44k from a dealer. What am I missing here?

Don't get wrapped up in the low mileage what if the previous owner used this SOLELY as a track car...that's 9000 hard miles considering it's got an exhaust springs and a BBK that's not out of the realm of possibility...9000mi on an 08 you're thinking weekend driver so why the BBK then? Aftermarket wheels (18" track wheels?) I'm not saying it's a bad car but the low miles doesn't necessarily mean less risk thank 20-30k mi

This is exactly what I thought when I read the car he was looking at had a BBK, exhaust and lowering springs. Selling the BBK alone with a trade for OEM brakes would close the gap on what that car is really worth.

I dont think it was tracked because the wheels that used to be on the car, the dealer estimated to be worth $6k. Not sure who's going around tracking on 6k wheels. Of course that could be a lie, but I don't see another reason to put brand new 19s on the car.

That CarMax one looks pretty great, it's just slightly out of my price range. I like the idea of newer – but as an 11, the warranty expires in 15. Since I don't drive much, I'm not sure how much I'd be able to take advantage of that. I'll have to see if I can swing that extra 3.5k (trade in value I got from dealer is $500 higher than what I got from CarMax.)

Low miles is king if your going to hold on to the car. I bought my 08 with 18k. If the mods on the car are ones that you would do anyway I think it's even a greater buy. Also just because it's modded and has bbk doesn't mean it was tracked. 90 percent of cars on this forum never see the track. At 9k miles, that car should be real clean, 2-3k more or less isn't going to make you or brake you. And don't get cought up with options because at this point all e9x is old technology. What's important is the engine transmission of your choice and milage

I already have a refundable deposit on it in Long Island. Just looking at prices of other 08, this one doesn't seem to be killer, but it doesn't seem unreasonable. I'm just looking to see if people thought this seemed like a rip off.

It's not a ripoff if you turn around and sell the mods you don't want.

Taking the mods off and putting OEM brakes back on seems like it would be a hassle to me. I don't have any mechanical abilities above and beyond performing cosmetic fixes. By the time I bought OEM brakes, had a mechanic remove and reinstall brakes, it seems like I wouldn't really net too much. Yes I tend to hold onto cars for a long time. The 330 I have is 11 years old and driven only 35k miles.

I would have kept onto it longer, but I haven't been too kind to it over the past few years. The salt water and the sun have rotted away most of the weather seals and sunfaded all the black parts. Now that I have my garage back, I can store a new car more properly.

Nah, you can trade someone on here for the brakes. If you check your regional forums, I'm sure there are some local members that would be willing to help you yank the brakes off for a 12 pack of beer and maybe 100 bucks.

Without actually knowing the specs of your brembo kit (I'm sure someone with better knowledge of BBK's could tell you the size of the rotors to determine market value), you would still net close to 2 grand after the dust settled, no pun intended.
