Paint correction - orange peel
anybody who is getting a new M looking into or already gotten paint correction (i mean real wet sanding get rid of the awful patented BMW orange peel correction)?
if so, let me know if you have any good guys in the NY metro area you've used. It's sad to me that all these new cars the paint looks so bad on the close up shots you can't even see a reflected pole in a straight line.. yes I did a few quick searches and nothing bubbled up so I figured I'd start a thread. If you know of a thread, please paste it in reply instead of just telling me to search better kthanksbye

I didn't think correcting orange peel was possible without re-painting - my understanding is that it's at the paint layer and some type of eco-thing to do with how the paint dries. To fix it you'd have to strip the car and use different paint, but I don't know that for a fact.

A pro can wet sand, it's a time consuming job but Peel can be corrected. It's the clear coat and the way it dries unevenly.
Lots of YouTube vid examples. http://youtu.be/RxnnA7ntDUo

Wet sanding and buffing it out and then coating it with Gtechniq C1 and Exo V2 is what you need. This company is worth the drive. All high end car owners with OCD use Rob. He did my Xpel ultimate.

So where is the orange peel effect then? In the clear coat? Cause wouldn't you have to sand all of that off? i will google it, but thought you might be faster

wow, yeah, ok so just refreshed my knowledge ... big process: DA wet-sand w/1200 then rebuff w/ 2000 or if it's so bad that doesn't work you have to re-clear. badass.
here's a nice whiteboard graphic I snagged if anyone's wondering what causes it - it's one of these factors: |

Also, the human touch, which corrects issues and ensures quality (e.g. Sanding ) eliminates this. Too expensive, I guess. If I took my car to a paint shop and got a BMW like orange peel paint job I'd be hella pissed/knot paying until it was done right. Sucks we have to put up with this.

Yeah my 97 camaro SS and 09 z06 both had better paint/less peel than the bmw. I didn't do a random orbital on the 335, but I did do swirl removal on the Chevys. I gotta dig up pics.

Be VERY careful with this....In order to correct the orange peel you must wetsand the ENTIRE car, and there is not much paint on this thing to start with. My first F10 had an average of 125 microns of coating thickness, but this F80 has a maximum of 110 microns with some spots as low as 95 microns. Not a lot to play with. Just live with it. Most of the UV inhibitors in the paint are in the top 1/3 of the clear coat anyway so its not the best idea anyway.

You would have to be insane to wetsand your car unless u had a major blemish/scratch!! There is nowhere near enough clear coat as others have stated. Ever bit of clear coat you take off will impact the long term protection. Also none of my other cars have orange peel like a BMW it's something BMW does better than anyone but it is to be expected in my eyes!
