lol no they do proof-of-concepts on the technology itself. does cost money but it's nothing too crazy, besides if they do DI R&D that does not mean they wont use it on other engines.

German car makers are not like Subaru making a new model every 2 years. German car models live for a while. You do not want to buy a 80k car and know that in 2 years it'll look dated. that's mostly the idea, that's why porsche looks the same since like 1960 lol

it's a sales/marketing stats that drive the decision not to change the engine or make significant changes to the cars.

for instance i like the 370Z a lot today, but i know in 2 years they'll rev up the engine some more and get some more hp out of it. so i'll wait!

I think those are just cars he wants.

The black series Mercedes are extremely rare and you have to be picked to buy one. Just like Enzos.

It's not that simple. That's not how products are developed. It's one thing to have a prototype, another to have a production version. The initial prototype, by its mere existence, does not tell you what you need to know to make a production version of it. It takes years to develop a new production engine, test it thoroughly, and tool it for production. Look at how long the current V8 has been in development. I am talking about a significant modification, not a slight bump in power. The S54 engine has been around for many years, and used in more than just the M3--even after they stopped making the E46 M3. If it was as simple as you put it, then they would have given the most recent model M coupes some serious power boost as the engine had been around for 8 years. Simply not worth the costs.

Well, not according to this post, if it is to be believed: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=235820. Since it was take at a dealer, it's hard to know.

Lets just hope they dont stick some sort of blow thing on it... The reason I like M's is because they are naturally aspirated engines. I would drive a Prius if I gave a shit about fuel consumption.

To save further weight, they're going to make the engine itself out of carbon fiber...
