Istep update issue/concern

Recently I needed to replace my telematic unit and also wanted to update my istep to the latest version in order to get full screen car play.

I called the dealer and they wanted 1200$ + 460$ to program the telematic unit.
I got the part number and found the telematic unit for 650$ from bmw Miami.

I reached out to our local bmw indy/ specialist not the dealer and they said they will replace the telematic unit for 200$ plus they said they will update my istep to the latest as this is a requirement when replacing telematic.

Now here is my issues and concerns.
I just got my car back took 6 hr for programming.
The istep level shows as S15A-24-3-519 now
The idrive system has not changed on the idrive still shows NBTevo_S193221
CarPlay is already full screen without me having to do anything
BimmerCode tells me unable to code head unit as it’s not in the original state.

Not sure what’s going on here.

Well I though updating the istep also updates to nbtevo_x but I’m guessing I’m wrong there.

Also why am I unable to code head unit now with Bimmer code. Here is what I found under Bimmer code

That is correct. This iDrive version info has no bearing on vehicle integration level.

It seems that your car has been treated with FeatureInstaller to install fake FSC's for CarPlay and other functions. BimmerCode detects this manipulation and will no longer code head unit.

well I was able to code with BimmerCode a few days ago. Even though I never coded anything because I know I was going to do the update.

Also I already had CarPlay so I did not need that.

Is there a way to go back to stock? Also how do I update the idrive to the latest version.

Also my auto stop start is no longer working. Everytime I stop I get the icon crossed out with a line.

Perhaps you tried to manipulate some other module, not HU. BimmerCode lockout only applies to head unit coding procedures. Or someone treated your car with FeatureInstaller between that. Was it the indie you visited? Whole vehicle update with ISTA usually wipes fake certificates and their associated coding from modules. Indie had to do something to restore HU coding to its previous state.

You can get back to "stock" with HU if you have original service code for FeatureInstaller process that was carried out. I gather that you dont have it, so you can't revert using that program. Other option is to extract fake FSC's and VO code the head unit (unless FA has been modified). This will of course wipe CarPlay, navigation updates, Apps and what ever you have coded in there. Even if back to stock, I hear that BimmerCode still wont let you code HU, so you just have to live with that.

If your car is properly updated to latest i-step, then there is no need for updating of head unit. Dont pay attention to this version number you see in CID. It is an internal configuration identifier and has no bearing on integration levels.

System requirements, comfort requirements, battery state of charge ... could be many things.

Yes i had an indie do the update, I asked prior to do in this and they told me they have all the tools from BMW and will update with ista.

I spoke him today and asked point blank if the car was patched with Custom FSC, He said once the update completed, HU tricked theft protection and he had to contact someone for a remote session to get it unlocked. I would assume this person patched the head unit without advising me on this.

Yes you are right, i might never need to update again, however if the dealership ever updated my HU for any reason I'm pretty much stuck and will have to use future installer again.

Also another issue I'm having BMW remote lock and unlock will not work, I can see the car and the status but requests fail to open or close car

Huh, that's confusing.

I wonder why component protection got triggered in the first place. And if indy has AOS access then why not request FSC170 (used to disable component protection) from PuMA, or request iRAP ression from tech support if they cant figure it out temselves. Feature Installer can do it as well but you will end up with patched head unit. Not that there is anything particularly bad about it, but you will lose the coding if HU is updated or VO coded in the future.

And by not needing to update your iDrive I meant that it is already up to date and that version number from vehicle display doesnt mean anything in this context. If dealer will update it in future then they will restore it to factory state along with stock enabling codes. They have OEM FSC repair packs in hand, as should AOS participants. No need to worry about breaking anything, just losing aftermarket coding.

Dont know about the keys, but if only remote locking features are unavailable then perhaps there is key fob synchronization procedure like there was for E series cars.

Yea I’m not sure either. It’s what it is at this point.
I had someone help me with ista installation and they check the ecu units.

Looks like 3 of them did not get updated and the telematic unit has a weird date on it. But if they used future installer they probably don’t have aos as it does not make sense to go through the patching when they could have requested the code as you said.

I think the remote unlock is probably due to battery state at 77% but I will check this weekend after I update the battery.

Got it confirmed that an fsc pack was used.
I spoke to them on the phone today and was told to bring the car back and have it reprogrammed but I’m not sure what that means so I will have to talk to them about what they are actually doing.

Keep us posted on the situation. Interested to know why exactly they took the steps they did and why do they need to reprogram it again.

This has been resolved. Hu returned back to stock and latest istep installed.
