335i Dyno at Surrey Rolling Road
Hi guys, I thought I'd share my results of the dyno session I had at Surrey Rolling Road (now) in Farnborough.
i've got the following mods; JB4 G5 (Map 5 and Map 4 for base line run) Wagner Catless downpipes Wagner FMIC Mr 5 style modded airbox 15L of 96% bio ethanol (the rest tesco 99) Dyno Dynamics 4wd dyno. All runs were in 4th gear (auto) So using the autotuning in Map 5 (boosting to around 17.5psi) it made 436bhp and 510lb/ft and the crank. Baseline run was straight after, which achieved 305bhp and 330lb/ft. Here are the power figures at the wheels; Map 5 365whp and 430lb/ft Stock 255whp and 275lb/ft Overall I was very pleased with the results seeing as it's a 110whp delta and apparently it's the highest x35i they've seen on the dyno! I've got the AFR graph if anyone is interested. Cheers James

Nice figures, you should get a BT cable and flash for ethanol if you're using it. Also, upgrade your in tank pump and run a higher mix for more power
Where are you getting your ethanol from mate? Are you using the bio fuel used for fire heaters? |

Hi guys, yes I do use bioethanol for fire places. A guy on n54tech has been using it for a couple of years in the UK. I buy it from here
http://www.bioethanolforfires.com/deliveredfuel.html I run a max of 20l per full tank of 99ron which is about 30% bioethanol. I've logged trims and fuelling and it's all good but that's as far as I will go on stock fuel pump and flash. I tend not to run it all the time mainly due to the expense of it, but it's good fun when you do. The car runs so smooth and the pickup is instantaneous! There are two versions of bioethanol you can buy so I use the purist version at 96%. I hope this helps James

Impressive! But damn that bio ethanol is expensive!!!!
I am going to assume you going to the petrol pump... add the 15-20l of bio ethanol then fill up with fuel so it all mixes together ...correct? Do you get any odd looks when your filling your car up when its not from the pump? CHeers Josh |

Lol I normally add the 15-20l of bioethanol at my house then drive around to the petrol station and brim the tank.

James does the car run quite happily on map 5 with no other tweaks ? Thinking about giving this a go.

Yeah I started off with 10l to begin with and ran some logs to check trims, ignition timing, etc. then I went upto a maximum of 20l. That's running just map 5. When running just 99ron it would boost to 15-15.5psi tops. With ethanol it'll hit 18psi comfortably. Just make sure you log it and check for timing drops.
I usually buy 25l worth and it normally lasts me a month or two if I use it sparingly. As I said it's not something I run day in day out as it's too expensive, but for dyno days, and long blasts on the weekend it's perfect. It's just too bad we can't get it at the pumps over here James

yep that's right! Keep it under 30% bioethanol concentration and you should be ok

If you get a bio ethanol Vinyl Sticker and put it on your rear window... you get an extra 5bhp too hahah

Would love to do this but to setup the flash correctly with multiple logs etc and then run map 3 or 7 to get the best out of the jb4. Too much to feck about with for occasional use, if only we could get this at the pump.

If we were to make a trip onto the continent and fill up with bio ethanol... Could it be safe and easy enough just filling up a full tank with it and running map 5 and letting the car auto tune? Are logs etc... necessary? |

Anything over 30% will cause lean codes as the trims will max out and the low pressure fuel pump will not likely be able to keep up. To run large quantities of bioethanol you'd need a remap and up rated lpfp at the very least.

100L is £1.90/L
That's only 5 fill ups! But given how bad it hurts fuel economy I suspect it'll be an expensive venture!!
