SoCal advice on trade in for 235i.
So I'm looking to get into the new m235 and am trading in my 2011 335 M sport. The dealer quoted my car $26600 which I feel is a slap in the face when they have cars on their lot windowed at $34k (I do get it that they will sell for probably 2k under that) I wanted to get the forums advice on how much I should ask for my car so that we can play the numbers game in getting the 235 that I want. The build I want is $49875.
My car; 2011 335 m sport e90, 23k miles, Le Mans blue, fully loaded minus HK and comfort access. Has PPK installed as well. Is me asking for $30500 too much? When the $$ is going back into purchasing the 235 anyways? I've seen 335's between $33800-$36500. The higher priced ones being M sports. Yet 90% of those cars have 20k miles more than mine. Any advice and opinions would be helpful. And yes I'm about to post my car for sale privately since that's my best bet. It's just so much easier if I got rid of it through a trade. I'm in the San Diego market if that helps with anything. |

To get the trade in value I used the web and did the valuation on like 4 different sites. Trade in was very near equal on all the sites, and my BMW pay off is around $300-$400 in my favor to $100 I would have to cover. Try the online used trade in valuations they are pretty good. There is Kelley, Edmunds, cars.com, and a few others. Your very low mileage for the model year is in your favor as that adds value. I just did your on the NADA site. Trade in range for your 335i is $28K to $32K, depends on the condition of your car. Average condition is $30,150. $28K for rough, and $32K for clean/exceptional. Clean/exceptional cars require no reconditioning of anything, just a good detail cleaning. I think your valuation at $30,500 is right in the ball park. Plus, since you're doing this to buy another BMW, then your dealer should easily be able to give you top trade in value, or at least between the average and clean/exceptional value. BMW series have exceptional resale value and your dealer knows this. Go in with all your homework and data printed out an in hand. Know what you want for your trade in and put that on one sheet of paper. Then, know what the M235i you want is priced at, and what you are willing to pay for it. If you're doing a lease, then get the lease details up front on the web and use the online lease calculators to figure out what your monthly payments will be based on MSRP, the actual selling price, money factor/interest, residual value based on lease years and mileage, and your stat tax. The tax varies from state to state. Some states only tax on the monthly payment, while other states make you pay the tax on the actual negotiated selling price. Make sure you keep the trade in sale and new car purchase as separate transactions! Do NOT get into negotiating the trade in value while negotiating the price for the new BMW. They will work you if you do. Keep the transactions separate and it will be much clearer and easier to do what you need to do. Once you get the trade in deal sorted and the dealer signs off, then work on the new car purchase. By doing separate negotiations you can concentrate on one deal at a time. My 2013 335i Msport w/sport AT payoff is $38,027. From the sites I've used edmunds.com was the lowest at around $34,500 KBB up to $38090, and NADA at $40,225. My 335i is in the top of condition as it's not even 2 years old yet and it's extremely clean, and that adds value. $34K to $40k is pretty wide, but I think somewhere between $37,500 to $38,250 is about right. I figure if my dealer wants to sell me an M235i and get me an early lease trade in, then they can do a $0 balance on my trade, meaning I owe nothing and they give me nothing. I can then work a deal on an M235i with a clean slate. Go do your research and go get your deal! Last edited by RPM90; 06-15-2014 at 01:21 PM.. |

Thanks!! I'll try carmax for giggles. Just never went since we just took my wife's Mini Cooper there and they offered me 4k less than what the ford dealer ended up giving me. But it's worth a shot since it's a diff vehicle now. I'll look online to those trade in valuations. It's just frustrating to see cars windowed so much more. I understand the dealer will have to dump $$ to re-certify car and possibly new tires. But I figured they are a dealer and can get those prices a lot lower than the average joe But they can still make some $$ if the went above their $26600 quote. Oh well.
I also just reached out to all the SD county dealers and started playing everyone's numbers so I'm hoping one comes close to get me closer to that m235!! |

One other piece of advice, wait until the last two days of the month when a dealer needs to hit their number and you might get a lot better deal.

Who are you working with? Stay Far away from BMW of San Diego. Worst dealership in the country.
Try my buddy Josh Keyton at BMW of El Cajon .. The dealership is brand new and they have always treated me right. |

My 335 was $52500k MSRP and the sale price was $48900. With only $2k down and $2k for my trade in. I'm paying $530/month via select financing. Told dealer I want to be at about $480-$500. Past 48 hours have been in contact with the other BMW dealers and we shall see what comes to play this week. |

The other thing to remember is that it costs the dealer $1,500 to CPO the car. So you need to subtract that from the cost of the cars on the lot for a fair comparison.

If its what you reaaallllyyy want, then build it. Or if you're fine with selling it a few years later for something else then I'd just get something you'd like for the time being .

If offered the right price then maybe I'll settle. My priority is just seeing on what I can get on my trade. That NADA site had some numbers I would like to work with with the dealer. Keeping in mind the $$ they need to CPO it. Warranty is up for me in Sept so I want to buy by then too. |

Give carmax a serious look. I've dealt with them in the past and usually got the lowest offers... but was so surprised when they came in $1,000 above my local BMW dealer's best trade-in offer for my 328i. The used sales manager at the dealer thought they were insane and said yeah, definitely take that deal. I think carmax has it's eyes on well-optioned, unique-color cars, and especially when yours looks so clean you might be surprised.
