so, just pulled up outside my dads house and went to switch off the car, and this pops up on my dash.

When i switch the car off, the steering wheel does lock, and ot starts okay, anybody encountered this before?

Ive recently taken out a bmw extended warranty, it starts 10th july. i go back to work for 2 weeks on on tuesday 18th june, could i hold on and wait until my warranty starts, then take the car to BMW? Or would they know the problem has been there a while?

I have a diagnostics machine which i could use to erase the code i think, if i did this, and took it to bmw once my warranty starts, will they be able to see that the fault started before the warranty period, and was hidden?

*edit* i don't know if this is linked, but i noticed the battery life on the car isn't very good, if the engine is off, the car only lasts around a minute of playing music until i get a battery sign pop up on the dash, i was planning on waiting for the car to struggle to start before getting a new battery, as at the moment ot starts fine.

Low battery is the cause.
Solution:
New battery.
Reset the error.
Update the module.

Job done.

If its on yellow, then you can driver to the dealer. If its on red and your car is 05-early 07, you can still start. Cars with later date do not start when they are on red steering wheel error.

Batteries seem to be good on these cars for around 4 maybe 5 years at best then things start to happen. As Makkah rightly says the procedure is with one edition as he's laid out.

We usually carry out a power test in the Autologc that'll highlight power usage charge rate etc, we can easily request a 7 to 28 days moniter report which will highlight journey duration with a full power report. This will state as a report summery whether the battery is exhausted.

If it is the battery obviously that's not covered under warranty, but labour isn't charged. I think it was around £100.

Paid for a new steering column after wheel locked and car would not start. Dealer stated software couldn't fix it. $1,320! Love it! Maybe a carshield warranty is in my near future. LoL.

That problem aside, I just replaced my battery at 9 years, 166,000.

Only replaced it because xhp software was telling me my resting voltage was 11.5v, I figured it was time to replace it.
