F80 Spoiler Delete
Anyone else considering it? Pros and cons?
For me, I like a clean look. I would be open to an integrated lip like the F82 has, but probably won't ultimately take the plunge and spend the money on that. |

Even so, I am OK with losing whatever stability it provides since it would probably only be effective at extremely illegal speeds anyway. Plus, my old E90 335i did fine on the Autobahns with no spoiler and I imagine the F30 does too. Add the wider track, better suspension, etc. of the F80 and it's hard to imagine snipping the little lip strip will cause me to flip. Heh heh. |

I recall the same (if I'm not completely mistaken). They were talking about the airflow and why the trunk of the M4 had to be shaped differently and thus the spoiler was not needed was answered in the same interview.

Use fishing line or dental floss. Then clean off the residue.
Cheers.

Sure, if you can get someone to buy it, why not? There's no factory delete option, so yes, we are definitely talking self-delete.

Good idea since you're already going to be ordering through Individual anyway. In my case I don't want to complicate things just for that one request. |

I replied yesterday thinking you were asking about *adding one*. I then re-read the thread and realized you were talking about deleting. I then looked at some of the pictures and, frankly, for the first time noticed that there was a spoiler on the M3.
Obviously, in Canadian fashion, I have been in a drunken stupor and on the crack cocaine for the last 4 months because despite looking at many, many, many pictures and fantasizing this car, and seeing it in person, I have never actually noticed that spoiler. So, if you trust me as a 'random observer' nobody will notice it. If you assume I am blind, everyone will notice it. As with everything in life, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle of the two extremes. Frankly, though, now that you have mentioned it....I would consider the delete option (the thrust of my misguided post yesterday was that I too prefer the clean look as, apart from general aesthetics, it helps keep the car a bit more of a sleeper). However, I have absoutely no manual or physical dexterity and, if every model car and airplane I built as a child is any guide, if I tried to do this somehow the whole car would end up covered in glue, i couldn't see out of the windows (glue smear, again) and the front tire would end up glued to the bumper. ...which would promptly snap off the first time I touched the car. SO.....if I had the skill, I probably would. Since I don't, I will likely wimp out and leave it and assume nobody will really notice it. |

Let me know how that goes as I may well make a similar request when I get my very real ass off this metaphorical couch and order mine....

I would want to better understand it's importance before removing it. I.e. does it generate 2 extra pounds of downforce at 140mph?
These cars are not aerodynamic for their class and I believe you are seeing a more concerted effort to increase downforce at high speeds. That being said, if the factory offers it as an option, then you know it's gotta be safe to do short of those very high speeds. |
