I don't want the M2 to be called 2M, but it shows the dilution of the M brand. Soon you have to get an M CSL to have a true M car, but again only IF BMW will build an M CSL.

Audi has the best naming convention..."S" for a more-performance oriented car and "RS" for more hard-core.

Mercedes has the AMG and AMG Black Series.

At the risk of copying Audi again, BMW should consider using "S" for something like the current m235i....an S235i And keep "M" for pure M cars...

But honestly, I don't care that much. I don't mind admitting to my friends that my m235i is not a pure M car...I'm ok telling them that I'll get the real thing in about 3 years

But no. Please, no "2M"...it's already confusing enough. "1M" was a one-off limited car that couldn't re-use the "M1" name for reasons we understand.

i sort of agree. at least they are trying by putting the M at the front .

I can see it both ways though. ON the one hand i bought a 328 m sport. They could have just called it sport or whatever i could care less. It has like 15 M badges but its really just a nicer looking 328i. sport. Probably the only really different thing is the nicer steering wheel.

that said, from a marketing perspective it works great. M is a well known brand. And now i want a real M haha. Its upselling me every single day when i get in my car.

why would they name it 2M? it will definitely be M2. There is no historical BMW named M2 so there are no worries.

the 1M wasn't even actually named "1M". That's what people call it to shorten it's real name which is "1-series M Coupe"

I'm a marketing guy so I'm kind of looking at it differently than all of y'all what BMW is doing is not diluting the M brand, rather they are expanding it. They are expanding the brand into emerging markets. It's not brand dilution it's brand expansion. This is part of every successful brands growth trajectory. Get it?

Exactly, they are expanding the M market to others who may not be able to afford the flagship M3 they had for many years. It also gives you options for size and doors. I thinks its a great marketing plan. It will just take a few years for it to soak in. Just like most things. It grows on you in time. Right??

I think the funny thing is everybody always has something to complain about.

Same stuff over and over:
-M235i isn't a true M car (it's M performance, no one said it was true M, learn your f'ing cars before opening your mouth)
-M235i can't keep up with M cars (it can and does in short distances, which is what it was made for, it's not made for the track, that's why there is specifically a M235i racing car)

Then comes the M2
-It's gonna be something like "M2 is just a M235i racing car in disguise", it's not a true M

I do share the sentiment that when you see a M2 and a M235i right next to each other, logically from normal naming standards, the peons are going to say the M235i must be the stronger car. I think that's a mistake.

In the end, the M235i is an incredibly fun car that rivals e36 and e46 M3's, and that's exactly what it's meant to do. Leave it at that.

I admit the marketing tricks have worked for me. Had the car been called a 235i, I probably wouldn't have been drawn to it. M235i tells me this is a special car...not a pure M but something more special than just a 235i. It does come standard with a bunch of M-Perf stuff, doesn't it?

The 228i now can come with the track handling package, combine that with the M-sport package and M-sport brakes. The 228i is virtually the same car, but with a N20. It just isn't badged M228i.

It was a clever move by BMW, for sure.

I don't think you can get a LSD with the track handling package on the 228i? I don't know if a LSD is available for it?

Yeah I know what is marketing, and quite hate it as it slows down true growth Ferrari is not expanding their brand. They have the Ferrari California and that is it. As a marketing guy would you think that with the new California T making 560 PS and the next "F380" flirting with 700 PS, there isn't place for a 450-500 PS V6 Ferrari "Dino"? Don't you as a marketing guy think Ferrari having a 4WD luxury and spacy GT, the FF, should build a luxury SUV not to leave out this market to its rivals, Bentley and Lamborghini?

Your knowledge of Ferrari, Bentley, Lamborghini is quite impressive. I won't even pretend to match such brilliance. That is great talent that should not go to waste. With your great experience you should be a consultant to the luxury brands, and with your riches, go out and buy an Alpha Romeo.

You are confusing product strategy vs. product development vs. product marketing. Three distinct disciplines. By the way, this brand expansion that I spoke to, in terms of expanding the reach of their customer profile, is also known as segmentation. To answer your question I think Ferrari knows what their strengths are and I don't think Ferrari is in that business; doesn't mean they can't still slice and dice by market segment to gain greater share. They don't need to be in every sand box just as long as they are diverse enough in those they do play in.
