X1 6-Speed Transmission

Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying a X1 with the 3.5 engine. I am curious as to why it only has a 6-speed automatic transmission and what others who have that model think of it. We have a 2.8 X3 with the new 8-speed transmission and that is one smooth shifting and efficient transmission. Why doesn't BMW use that?

Anyway, my 335i has about 400HP with Dinan Stage 2 software, exhaust and air intake. That is the best set-up of any BMW I have owned. I'd like to have it in a X1 (I think).

Thanks,

My guess is that without the 8 speed, the 2.8 would be too harsh. I own the 2.8 and it's really fun.

I noticed with my 750 that the engine has so much power, normal driving is kind of non-dramatic.

With the slightly underpowered 2.8, you can push it at all phases of flight. The 2.8 is the little engine that could. The 3.5 is probably effortless, but the effort of the 2.8 makes it fun.

Rumor was that the 8s didn't fit. Or they were just using up inventory.

With the N55 torque, I don't really miss the 8s. Note that E90 N55 cars were as quick or quicker than F30 N55 cars. The real advantage of the 8s is keeping less torquey motors on full boost and it's generally more efficient.

One advantage to the old 6s is its incompatible with Auto Start Stop, so the X1 35i doesn't have that rubbish.

As an aside you posted in the F48 forum (the upcoming 2016 X1 model) and the ordering specs are not out ... so the final transmission/engine choice may be moot.
