Federal exhaust laws would help a case in a full exhaust failure, I'm sure in that case you would be covered, just remove it tune it and drive like you stole it...

Getting a DPF fixed under federal law will force the dealer to take care of the problem, removing it on your own will eliminate the thought of it ever failing...VW will fix DPF failures under warranty for federal law emmisions...

Should I just lease a car every 3 years so I avoid any problems with constant failures?

In VW case they will warranty up to 100k, don't know about BMW...

I'm pretty sure the EPA mandates that manufacturers warranty the components that are part of the emission system for not less than 80,000 miles.

NO.

This has been discussed many times.

BMW warranty: 4 years/50K miles
Federal Emissions Warranty: 2 years/24K miles
California Emissions Warranty: 7 years/70K miles 13 California States Only
Federal Emissions Warranty On Catalyst, ECU/DDE, OBD only: 8years 80 K

Starrfyr is covered (in OR) until 7/70. Everybody's DPF/Oxydation Catalyst, SCR Catalyst and DDE are covered until 8/80 - but that is only 3 components, and doesn't include egr, SCR tanks/plumbing, and everything else.

I monitor many boards, and I have not seen a single instance that BMW has covered CBU under any emissions warranty: only CPO or extended warranty.

The fed warranty should cover that combo part since it includes a catalyst.

Fed emissions warranty should really be expanded a bit. When the law was passed 80k was a decently used car. Today, 80k is practically a new car for a whole lot of people. If they want to push manufacturers to use more and more unproven technology for emissions the warranty should be expanded to 120k, or at least 100k
