Albert Biermann drives an M4 with MT and passive suspension.
There's been so much reviews at the same time that I missed this little gem from an M3 review:
"Would I get the adaptive EDS dampers or stay with the standard fixed setup? I don’t know since no cars were available to test without EDS, but engineer Biermann tells me his personal M4 manual is sans EDS and that he loves it. The calibration for the standard dampers and springs falls somewhere between the Sport and Sport Plus settings of the EDS, so it is perhaps ideal all day every day" Now, that's a rather strong endorsement until we have reviews about the passive suspension. I now feel more confident than ever passing on the EDC. My only concern was that they had made it too soft but that concern is now removed. |

Thanks for posting this. I too left that box unchecked. I'll probably get some KW V3 or some other variant, so leaving EDC off will make it cheaper and easier to get coilovers. Also, I may be the only idiot in the world that doesn't like to have too many choices when driving. I would rather have the car set-up and leave it alone.

Just thinking about something. The dozen or so magazine reviewers all said the sport plus mode was UNBEARABLE for the street and comfort while firmer than the e92 was still firm but perfect setting for daily drivers. With the sport setting perfect for spirited driving. So if this slots in b/w sport and sport plus it might be too firm. I can understand if your replacing the suspension, lowering and doing coils... but if not...idk about the standard setup.
Also keep in mind the rear suspension is bolted directly on the chassis. So inherently you will feel more texture from the road. Just thinking and saying. I'm waiting to drive both. The edc on the e92 was dynamic. With the e92 so may say the regretted the edc unless they were modding. Just my $.02 |

Most people will probably get 19" wheels like the test cars had, but I stuck with the 18" again (same as I had on the E46 and E93). I think it's going to ride just fine with these wheels and the standard passive suspension.
The active suspension definitely makes sense for those who want to be able to dial in more comfort when the situation calls for it. |

If you don't get the active suspension (Adaptive M Suspension), does that preclude the constant spooling of the turbos like what you get in Sport and sport + mode?

Common misconception, but if you read through the manual and/or FAQ you'll understand. There are three distinct elements of the car that are adjustable between the three Comfort (or Efficient), Sport and Sport Plus modes. These are the steering, suspension (only if you option the active suspension), and the engine character. These systems are each adjustable independently of one another, so they don't effect each other and in fact have absolutely nothing to do with each other. |

For me, the only reason I even considered the Adaptive M Suspension was b/c I was worried the passive suspension was going to be too soft. Knowing it's between Sport and Sport+ is perfect for me

I thought about getting rid of it also. Then i figured it wasn't worth not to have it just to drop my monthly payment 6 dollars or so. Why spend all that money on a car then leave out the one thing that can change the handling characteristics of this beast? Unless of course your going custom set up.

Very interesting, I'm looking forward to drive my dealer launch car in the next few days to see how rough the passive set up is before I considering ordering adaptive myself or just taking the dealer car and not having to wait for my ride.

Update:
"BMW genius" left me a voicemail saying based on their research only M-Adaptive electronically monitors the road. Does this sound like a feature definitely worth pursuing? Or do you think it's a bit superfluous? Thx! Hate to pass up my deal on a car soon arriving, but... Will fewer want this car without it after the launch excitement fades? Looking to sell at lease end. |
