335i vs M3 (sad...)

So this evening on the way home from the girl's parents house, we were making our way on the freeway when I creep up on an M3 and get beside him. I notice the shiny red light of his radar detector. (press dts, slip to DS)

Not many people on the road except two people herding in the center two lanes which are coming up fairly quick. I goose it and get over in the number 4 lane (farthest left) and get a good 5 or 6 car lengths. Then I notice he shoots around to the right in the number 1 lane and I know its game on...

Wait a minute.... NNNNnnnnnnoooooooooo......

Limp mode... engine malfunction...

Running Procede 1.47. I had just filled up with a new tank of gas and I can assume the change in gas could have caused this... Just Chevron pump 91.

So, he goes flying past me and I just slip into speed limit mode and a polite bow. Crap! I could tell he was like WTF? I should have asked him if it was ok to pull over while I restart my car. When it runs, it's strong. But dang... always at the time you want it. o'well...

Sorry, had to vent.

Can't wait for V2.

Sorry to hear about you going limp. Just an FYI, I avoid Chevron in CA like the plague. We've always recommended either 76 or Shell. With 91oct, we gotta be picky here in CA. Also, check your air filter and make sure its reasonably clean. As they get dirty, it makes it harder and harder for the turbos to hit the boost target with the allowable boost solenoid duty cycle range. I saw a car last week that had to run on the LBT map until we swapped in a clean filter. Now he's back to the regular map without a hiccup.

If the limp is a recently reoccurring issue and was induced at high rpm (above 5500rpm) then it's likely the boost target issue. In that case, check your filter and your system for leaks. If it occurred in the midrange (4000-5000rpm), it was most likely a bad gas issue and fill up from another station next time. Pretty rare with name brand gases but it has been known to happen.

I run 95 oct in germany and get limp mode with an extra person sometimes, or when i hit speed limiter..

My trick is to turn off the car and back on while im coasting, i slow down about 60mph, let the rpms drop, turn the car off and on real quickly, and then keep going. Saves me from having to stop completely

Stock and ITG.

Back on gas... I stopped using Chevron a few years ago when I noticed that my Evo was always 15-20whp down on all our customer evos when run on the dyno. For months, I just thought I had a weak motor. I was using the same Chevron gas station around the corner. Then I switched to Shell and it was a revelation. A lot of customers have noticed the same.

95oct RON may not be sufficient for the standard map. Might even be worse than our 91 (RON+MON)/2 fuel. Have you tried the LBT version of the map? Or better yet, is any higher octane fuel available where you are?

HAHAHA, I know the feeling buddy. I have done a "reboot" at 120mph before. Quote a few times actually.

95RON at 5500ft is ok with the normal map, but you may need a bottle of good octane booster.

chevron 91 is ok in the summer but don't use it in the winter. Unlike shell and 76, they use an oxygenated blend in the winter in Cali for emmission purposes.

Good quality gas is a must in a tuned 335i.

Just look at the video and you'll understand.

I am using the SHELL Vpower 99 oct.

M5 with no govener at 250km/h and 440hp.
Procede V1 vs Modded M5 E39

Thanks for the input Shiv. To be honest, I have not replaced the air filters since I picked up the car last December, and with the fires, ash and all. I even told myself to replace them, just haven't yet. It makes sense what you said though as it was at high rpm, around 6500rpm.

The reason I am giving chevron a try again is I was strictly using Shell and I would get this knocking, chugging noise at low rpms.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91526

Anyway, I'll switch to 76 for a while and give that a go.

Don't think this is an option for me as I am an auto. Do you not have to hold the break in when starting a manual?
