New Side Mirror Cover

OK, one of the aggravations of living in Germany is the fact that you are definately encouraged not to wash your car in your driveway; so I take my car to the automatic wash here in town. The rotating brush proceeds to rip the cover off my left hand mirror. Car wash attendent looks at it and sticks it back on; its secured with clips, apparently desiged by BMW that way as with most Euro cars I find out; its dark but everything looks ok. Get home to the garage and look at it and it's all scratched up. Try some scratch-X, but the scratches are too deep. So here are the questions:

- Anyone know how much these covers run? I will go by tomorrow to show them the cover and scratches to see if they'll pay for it. Otherwise it's a trip to the dealership and pay for it myself.
- Are these covers painted or do they come in the correct color already? They're plastic, so I'm not sure. I popped it off again in the garage, it looks like it might be painted, but not sure.

I've had parts of cars repainted. It's never right and the paint never lasts like from the factory. What a pain. I was trying to keep this car pristine by keeping it in the garage, not driving in the snow, etc., but already (4,500 miles) have a nick in the right rear wheel, nicks in the too-soft aluminum trim and a scratched side mirror. Anyone want to buy this one off me and I can start over?

Encouraged not to wash in the driveway? I would encourage them to kiss my ass.

Thanks, LZ. I could have gone a long time without that visual...

Just trying to avoid being the "ugly Amerikaner"... I'll just have to keep the car garaged more.

Lessee, pissing off the locals by washing all that nasty stuff off in plain sight is probably not a good idea, so the "kiss my ass" comment is probably out.

While *I* think a carbon fiber cover would look ok on your car, I bet your wife wouldn't think so...

I say... bring it over to my house and wash it in my backyard where my neighbors won't see it, (and the ones that do are Americans anyway). All you have to do is help me wash both of mine...

I have the same problem, even the same mirror - the one on the left side. The guy at the car wash said that happens to most BMWs. I never had a problem there with my Audi S4. I had the dealer look at it once, and he said it was just fine. Yeah, right. I think there is a problem with the clips that hold it.

Just wondering, How come they discourage washing the cars in driveways over there?

Washing cars on private property such as a driveway would only be allowed in Germany if there is a device installed for filtering oily substances out of the waste water.

Yeah, they don't like the idea of the random fluids that come off a car when you wash it from draining into the sewer.

Of course, the rain sorta does the same thing...
