How to Import Playlists to HDD?

I have tried and tried and cannot for the life of me figure out how to import a playlist to the HDD of my 228i with Tech package. I've created .m3u playlists through itunes and opened them in notepad and adjusted the directories to match thee USB thumb drive which enables the iDrive to recognize and use the playlists on the thumb drive. However, when I import the usb drive to the iDrive HDD, the playlists don't show up.

To add to the frustration, I've downloaded a couple CD's that came with playlists that transfer to the HDD just fine, so I know that it's possible. Even this though is confusing, since it doesn't appear to be the .m3u playlists of the CD folder that is transferring over to the HDD, indicated by the fact that the iDrive HDD playlist title is different from the .m3u playlist file on the usb stick.

Anyone have any insight into this? I've searched this and other forums/sites to no avail. The owner's manual doesn't seem to be any help either.

Thanks for the help!

I finally figured it out. The playlist and all of the music files all have to be in the same folder for it to work. I.e., you can't use a playlist that links to music in different folders (such as the way that iTunes arranges music in folders).

Is there anyway to pull individual songs directly from an iphone or ipod to the HDD?

Sorry it's a pretty old topic but as I am currently working on the playlist subject on my car...
You CAN do playlist with files from different folders as long as they use a relative path format.
Say your directory tree is:
USBNAME
-Folder 1
-Title 1.mp3
-Title 2.mp3
-Folder 2
-Title 3.mp3
-Title 4.mp3
-Playlist Folder
-Playlist.mp3
To play Title 2.mp3 and Title 3.mp3, the playlist shall contain the following two lines:
../Folder 1/Title 2.mp3
../Folder 2/Title 3.mp3
Using relative path makes the playlist work on the USB stick and on the HDD once it has been transfered.
You can use either à la Linux path '../../' or à la Windows '..\..\', I have tested with both

Enjoy your playlist

So I'm fighting with this playlist not showing up in the USB drive or after I import to the HDD. I use J River to make the playlist and it has an option to make the list relative to the drive the content is on so that is a good start. It is m3u format.

From the above post I must have a folder named Playlist to put the playlist file in? Currently I have a folder for each band.

Also is there limit to the number of songs in the playlist? I want my whole library in the playlist (@1500 songs). The reason is this appears to be the only way to get the browsing and navigation to work "normally", for example starting alphabetically with the first band and playing through the library, or if I want to skip to the next band. The filter method of navigation is poor, not sure why BMW would create it that way since no player I've ever had works like that.
