Motorcycle Insurance

Hi all,

I have a very unique scooter, and I'm having a hell of a time getting it insured. Looking for an agreed value policy, well above NADA value (heavily modified etc).

Tried Haggerty and Grundy, no luck. Anyone have a good company they use?

State farm covered my Ducati and modifications when I crashed.

Be careful though, I found out the hard way that State Farm didn't cover my medical in any way.

Well, I doubt many people have seen one of these before, unless in stock form (which is rare enough):

Italjet Dragster 180cc. Liquid cooled 2-stroke. Hub Center steering. Heavily modified. It's a beast. More photos here:

I live in Texas, but the bike is garaged in PA, which has been another hurdle for most insurance companies.

My view on bike insurance is that you pay for the bike in full and then just get liability. I pay $97/year for both of my bikes. If I lay it down, I'll just pay out of pocket to repair it. If it gets stolen, then I'll buy another one with the money I saved on insurance.

The problem is that some of us has some pretty rare and expensive bikes, and repair can be quite costly even it is just a parking lot mishap. So I wouldn't generalize here.

My bikes are paid, but I can't stomach the possibility of total loss on it in an accident or theft. I spent quite a while getting them free and clear, and don't want to start over in the event of a loss.

Coverage depends on state - but most companies will allow for you to cover additional modifications AND medical (if you request it)

OP, can you enlightening me on the appeal of these things? i just really don't get it. It's underpowered, flimsy brakes, and the chassis doesn't look too stable either. Hub-steering is cool though, but I really don't see if this thing can be more fun and safe than a proper motorcycle for the same money (you can get a 250-500cc starter bike in perfect condition for just $2-4k).

I spent about $35k building a custom soft tail in 2001. State Farm covers for about 500/yr. No medical, I just had to give them a picture for their records. I laid it down once, but didn't bother with getting insurance to cover the repaint.
