Who's gotten their radiator hoses done by dealer
My car is at the dealership right now for a water pump.
The SA called me friday and said I need the water pump, and hoses, there was a small leak, which I never noticed, never smelt anything either. He said that the Water pump would cost $1295 and the Hoses would be $1400 because there are about a dozen of them. A dozen radiator hoses? I called today and he said he's trying to get BMW to cover the water pump out of their own good will. Weird? Then have me pay for the hoses? I don't see where there could be a dozen hoses. My car has 50k on it btw. Any input to this? Do you think the dealer is being shady |

WOW! $2700 for pump and hoses.... That's a bit much! I know there are quite a few hoses, but that sounds like all labor charges.... (BMW used a lot of small hoses instead of long single piece hoses like domestics)

hoses must be made of some new carbon-titanium-gold weave. I would not pay that much for hoses even if it included labor, that's ridiculous
image of hoses and pump/thermostat.

No way would I pay to replace all of the hoses. The only one that's routinely replaced is the u-shaped hose that goes between the thermostat and waterpump, simply because it's cheap and has to come off anyway. Many of the other hoses are a nightmare to replace. When I replaced the u-shaped hose it still looked brand new and I wouldn't have done so had I not already had a hose on-hand. I'd have them show you which hose is leaking and where and if it really is leaking, replace only it.

Either way I would end up paying around 13-1400 for either the water pump, or the hoses.
I definitely need the water pump. I know that for a fact.. It just seems weird to me for him to get the water pump covered by BMW then charge me for hoses. lol idk |

Water Pump job is the part, plus 3 units of labor, a gasket, a tstat, and moving some stuff around. ~500-700 independent. Throw in a new radiator and belts and hoses and you might get to a grand. A good idea to do every 80k or so. If my guy knows he's taking a bunch of stuff out in the same area, and the sub jobs are all easier, he'll discount the job: like water pump, tstat, hoses, belts and radiator combine at least two units for r&r. Most indies will "package" common BMW jobs: Cooling system; struts and control arms; Brake rotors, pads, and fluid; etc. It's always better to do these jobs together.
Anyway the stealer is taking you for a fool. You can get your recall warrantee done anywhere. Last edited by TiminCT; 04-22-2014 at 12:12 PM.. |

Thermostat not mentioned
Thermostat not mentioned .
Usually people suggest both be changed at the same time. Sounds like they are hosing you on the hose job. |

1 - let the dealer goodwill the WP and replace hoses for $1400. Not a bad deal, but you likely don't need all new hoses. 2 - forget the goodwill thingy, let the dealer replace the WP and the one leaking hose for probably about the same ($1400). 3 - let an Indy replace your WP for about $8-900 and give you a straight answer about the hose. All the above should include the thermostat. GL
