DIY: M Performance Carbon Interior

Gents,

We currently have no DIY section; but I will post in the General Forum for the time being. These DIY's are done by a normal do it yourselfer. I do how ever have access to a hoist and by degree I carry a mechanical engineer background but I keep them geared towards the regular hobbyist.

----
Tools needed
  • Slim trim removal tool
  • T20 Torx
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Beer

----
Difficulty rating (1-5, 5 being hardest): 1

----

I started with the center piece. This was done easiest by moving the arm rest to the back position and sliding my slim trim removal tool in. See below

Once you have pried up enough to get the first clip out just start making your way back. The trim will come up quite nicely.

Once the trim is lose, you will notice the iDrive wire is still connected to your trim piece. For sake of simplicity I removed the iDrive while still connected with a T20. It's held on by three obvious screws.

Once the three screws are out the iDrive module will slip out nicely.

Grab your new center console trim piece and install in reverse

The driver side door vent is quite simple. Again, these are held on by only expanding clips and come off with little force. I always use my trim removal tool in a position if it were to ever damage any surrounding trim you wouldn't be able to see it at seat level.

Start by opening the door and prying from the corner of the vent near the bottom. You will notice that this piece comes out extremely easy.

Now you need to transfer over the vent. This is quite simple. The tabs are recessed inwards so pushing them down is quite difficult. The best way was the strip of the three tabs, I put my flathead vertical and pushed downwards on the vent (upwards on the connectors strip) and it popped out simply. With these removed the vent slides right out from its other five positional clips on the bottom.

Install the vent in the new housing by sliding the five positional clips in the bottom than pressing the top three in firmly, making sure each one clips in.

Next was the passenger large trim piece. Again, this one required very little force and simply slides out of it's clips. I started from the center outwards with my pry tool keeping my eye on the left corner to avoid damaging any of the surrounding trim.

The vent will come out with the trim piece like the driver side. Again, slide your screw driver in the section of 3 clips and press upwards on the strip of connectors. The piece will slide right out.

Great DIY!!

I'm considering getting this maybe! I think it will look good if the 2015 model comes with oyster/black!

do you have any close up pics of the M performance sticking? If I remember I think I read somewhere they didn't like it (I think F30 post) because the M performance looked a bit floppy).

Also - were you able to detach your black lower trim from the aluminum trim? I think some people were wondering if that part could be removable!

I've got an Blk/oyster interior coming on Monday. It will look MUCH better in 2015 with the oyster/blk interior. I may swap out door panels to black to break up the all white 14 MY interior. IDK why they did that...

Just read this post. The //M Performance is elevated from the alcantara so it's not stuck on. It actually is one of my most enjoyed parts for this trim set.

The lower black trim on the original is not able to be dettached, it appears that it's plastic welded together.

It took about 10 minutes for me to warm up to it, but now it's something I really appreciate. Sure Glossy would be nice but now I don't have to worry about yellowing. Not to mention, the texture to this trim is just beautiful. Feeling the weave is very nice!

The door handles I'll update. I had them off due to already working on them. They are extremely simple. Place your removal tool at the bottom (there is an slot in the trim that allows you to put a tool in) and pry. The door handles will require the most force and you must slowly make your way up with the tool. Prying out each clip till you get to the top. There is a clip every 2 inches or so. Make your way slowly and they will pop right out.

Totally like the Matte CF much much better than the glossy especially for the interior. I put this same type of CF on my 135i really liked it. If it was glossy, it would not find it's way on my car....

Anyone try this and have a tough time getting a trim tool under the center console piece. Mine is so tight up against the arm rest part I can't hardly slide paper in between it.
Any extra tips to help get it off?

If you don't have plastic trim tools try a old credit card to get it started. It takes a little force to get started by once you one clip up the rest can be pulled up using your fingers.

Aim for the middle section on the passenger side

Thanks I found a Gila film smoothing tool that was thin enough to get under the middle part. Then used a trim tool under that to pry it up

Gila tool the yellow card looking thing

Hi guys,

please can someone tell me how am I meant to install this i drive trim. I managed to install the all the other trims (vent, gear gaitor, handbrake etc) by levering the peices out with a trim remover but the I drive trim is very tight.

As you can see from the pics, i can barely fit a piece of paper in the gap between the I drive trim and plastic - please advise

I just cant see how I can fit the trim remover in to even get started. I am worried if I force it too much , it will damage the silver trim... Just cant see a way in... see the pics..
