is there a way to go from manual mode to sport in auto trans?

i'm relatively new in an e90. i like sport mode, but i don't like how the "sport mode" holds gears at high rpms when i accelerate hard, so i'll often shift it and that of course throws it into manual mode. is there a way to put it back into "sport mode" from "manual mode" without going back to the normal drive first?

normal drive is for when i don't feel like going fast. maybe on the highway with little traffic. but once i need to accelerate around, i go into sport, then i shift into manual, but then i want to go back to sport. guess you can't do it. too bad...

With an auto just go from P, to R, to D, then to P. That' sweat an auto does best

When in "D", your car will automatically chose a program (I believe there are about 5 'modes') that is close to your current driving style. So, if you drive aggressively, it will automatically shift later, down shift (engine braking), etc.. If you drive it easy, the engine motor management will adjust and shift up quickly (fuel economic).

An example: let's assume you're a chilled driver. If you'd cruise 30mph and suddenly hit the accelerator (not full throttle, but say 75%), the engine might stay in the same gear and not down shift. If you'd been driving aggressively for the last minutes, and were in the same situation. Then, after hitting the accelerator, the engine for sure will down shift.

By the way, if you press the accelerator 'through' the resistance (kick-down), you will overrule the previous gear-shift mode and the car will choose the most suitable gear in order to accelerate as fast as possible.

In other words, there is no need to shift to DS mode, the car automatically recognizes your driving style and adjusts the gear shifting pattern.

This is true over time, but it doesn't make instant adjustments as you are driving.

I just slap the shifter into D and then back into Sport mode. Pretty quick and easy for me. YMMV

Do u have paddle shifters?? If so just drive in d then use the paddles to downshift to whatever gear u want need after about 40 sec it will switch back to reg D! If that don't work for u just slap it into sport then back to drive then back to sport to have it shift automatically again that's basically your only options

This is how you do it.... At any time you can move from D to manual.

Yep. I also use peddle shifter to downshift whenever I feel like passing cars. No need to shift or switch to manual/sports mode.

Why wouldn't you be driving in manual mode most of the time anyway? That's by far the most fun way to drive a steptronic. I only leave it in D when I am in a parking garage, bumper to bumper traffic, or cruising on the interstate, assuming I just need to stay in one lane.

I do the same.

This....

Although a switch to put the car into complete manual mode would have been ideal.

I just noticed something else, if you hit the paddle at a light and go into manual from D it will not switch back to "D" until you move. I have a double clutch in my car but a regular auto might do that as well.

Correct what I'm saying is if he is in normal Drive mode "D" and he uses the paddle shifters it will automatically put him into sport Mode and let him change his gears as he wants but if he leaves it in one gear for too long say 10 sec it will go right back to normal D! The only real option without always staying in sport mode m

i don't have paddle shifters. wish i did. i don't like to drive aggressive 100% of the time. drive mode is great when i'm relaxed. my problem with manual mode is i forget to shift, and realize rpm's are way high or way low. i older stick shift cars, it's easy to tell high rpm vs. low with sound.. but can barely hear a difference in this car. having it in sport allows it to shift for me so i don't have to forget. also, sport benefit isn't just shift points, it accelerates much easier with a light touch of the gas pedal than the drive mode.

I think the best solution would be to leave it in regular drive more often and just push the accelerator down a little harder. If the only component of S that you like is the increased throttle response, the higher revving nature of S would be annoying to me as well.
