New CPO Rules: Where Does My Vehicle Stand
Yes, I did search but found conflicting stories so I am hoping someone can help.
My 2011 335i M-Sport Coupe has an in-service date of July 2011. The vehicle has the factory warranty until July 2015 and then CPO kicks in till July 2017. I purchased the vehicle at the end of January this year from a BMW dealership - however, the CPO paperwork was done in August of 2013 (the car sat on the lot for a long time). My question is, do I fall under the new CPO terms because of the purchase date - or do I have the old terms because of the date when the vehicle was "officially cpo'd"? I have heard it both ways and was wondering if anyone had a definitive answer. Thanks!

You mean whether the CPO can be transferred to the next owner? Is there another difference between 2013 and 2014? I got a car that was CPO'ed in 2013 and sold in January 2014 as well, so I am curious to find out.

Yup!!! BMW changed the CPO terms this year. Starting in 2014 more items are covered under CPO but it is harder to transfer the warranty to a new owner if you sell it privately due to new rules and processes.
I'm just curious as I have no intentions to sell but would be good to know. |

I've heard that CPO isn't actually filed/paid for by the dealer until you actually buy it. Based on that, I'd imagine you'd be covered under the new rules corresponding to your actual purchase date. But I'm not an authority, I'm just assuming and putting bits of info together.

When did you purchase the vehicle and what year is it. According to BMWNA there is a fee you have to now pay to transfer for private sale and paperwork to fill out...at least according to their site and recent press releases.

Plus now there is a 2-tiered CPO - the lesser "Elite" covers only 1 year/25K miles.
From the bmwusa website: BMW Certified Pre-Owned: Covers you for 2 years/50,000 miles* whichever comes first, after the expiration of the 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty for a total of 6 years/100,000 miles.* This includes up to 6 years of 24/7 Roadside Assistance and BMW Assist™ Emergency Call, which includes automatic collision notification, and TeleService. BMW Certified Pre-Owned Elite: These are newer model year, lower mileage (more than 300 miles but less than 15,001 miles) vehicles. This warranty covers you for 1 year/25,000 miles* after the expiration of the 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or for a total of 5 years/75,000 miles.* This includes up to 5 years of 24/7 Roadside Assistance and BMW Assist™ Emergency Call, which includes automatic collision notification, and TeleService.

I spoke with BMWUSA a week or so ago and they said it is based on when the vehicle is "CPO'd" and not sold. So in my case, since it was "CPO'd" in 09/13 it is covered under the old terms - even though it was sold in 01/14.

Curious - is your car a manual? I've got the identical car you have, just RWD, and it also sat for a very long time CPO'd. The dealer told me that manual BMWs up in the northeast are a difficult sell. I can't find a thing wrong with it, except for a pitted windshield.

Interesting. I wonder what it is about M-Sport cars that it took a long time to sell ours? Especially one with AWD. That's the one thing I wish I had.
