Dealer called me yesterday and they said I might need my turbo replaced. My warranty ended in January. Should I go non-OEM?

What are my options? RB Turbo?
Will I need just the turbo upgrade?
Will a stock (no engine modifications) car be able to handle bigger turbos, or do I need to upgrade more components?
Should I just replace with OEM turbo?

I'd go with Vargas or RB. The cost to upgrade from the OEM's isn't that much and I know the RB's have a fix for the wastegates whereas the new turbos will eventually go back to being a rattle monster.

You should look into upgrading at the least the downpipes, FMIC & a tune if you're going to upgrade the turbos.

I have a jb4 at home, but I never came around to installing it. What would be good brand of FMIC, and downpipes?

PS. The car will probably never hit the track. Mainly used as a daily driver, and bi-weekly canyon runs.

The chargepipe is recommended when raising boost levels since the OEM unit tends to fail pre-maturely and the intakes will allow the motor to breathe a bit better on the top end of the power band.

along with this suggestion.. would it be acceptable to install the RB's on a car with a tune, FMIC and a exhaust... for emissions im pretty hesitant on getting DP's

I'd be curious to see if it's possible to pass CA smog with upgraded turbos and stock everything else, or whether it's even good for the engine when untuned.

I'd like to know this aswell,I plan on upgrading my turbos when they go and I'd hate to have to swap dps once a year.

I'm sure you probably know this but there is a BMW extended warranty on the OEM turbo's depending on your mileage. What's your mileage?

This. I think the turbos are covered for like 8 years or 82k, or close to that.

Just got a call from dealer. Damaged Turbos are covered, vacuum hoses are cracked and not. So 500 something to have it replaced. I guess look at the glass half full. I just saved min 3k.

It's perfectly fine although you won't benefit too much from running with a catback over a set of catless downpipes since there aren't too many gains to be had over the stock catback system. If you're worried about emissions testing, there are o2 simulators available at a reasonable cost that can help you with that problem

This would not conflict with any sort of emissions or inspection testing, they'd never be able to check if the turbos were OEM or not and the emissions portion shouldn't change too much either as long as you're tuned for it. Untuned you may run into problems running too lean on upgraded turbos on a WOT pull but idle/mid range low load should be fine.

Being that you just came out of warranty in Jan, call the dealer back and see if they can get BMW to cover all expenses, worth a shot. Either way, yes you are saving thousands so that is good news.

I am paranoid that my turbos are going - getting smoke but no loss of power right now. Evaluating at dealer and delayed selling the car.

Is there a one-stop option or package to uprgade turbos that includes a tune, and associated mods.

vacuum lines can be fully replace and upgraded to high temp silicone lines for less than $75 at an Indy shop.
