looking for bike carrier recommendations

I bought my E90 a little over a week ago and wanted some advice on what you guys use to transport your bike. Trunk mount or roof mount? Any brands and models you can advise? I never bought one before since I used to be able to toss it in the back of my GTI. An E90 not so much.

It is a little pricey but I love my Whispbar setup. I have had the full range of racks and it is so quiet I don't mind leaving it on all the time. No matter what you get spend the 20 dollars and get the clear protection patches for the mounts.

Just installed the BMW system last week and love it. Heard the Thule setup is even better. Both are roof mounts btw.

I also have the BMW roof rack and bike carriers, and am very happy. Bikes are very secure and I don't have to worry about scratching the trunk. The bike carriers lock with a key so nobody can steal your bike off the roof.

Roof Racks

Here's my setup:

- OEM BMW crossbars (pretty sure Thule makes them)
- Thule Echelon Bike Carriers

I always gravitate towards bike carriers that utilize a fork mount... It keeps the center of gravity lower. I've had this setup for almost 3 years with no problems.

I'm a big fan of RockyMounts Euro PitchForks, they fit perfectly on the factory base bars and are secure and easy to use.

I tried a Thule trunk mount, but despite my careful cleaning of the trunk before mounting, the rubber pads eventually dulled the paint at the contact points after only several months of daily use.

Switched to the BMW roof bars which are made by Thule as even the Thule lock cylinders fit perfectly (I've read that the Thule branded aftermarket bars actually contact the paint, unlike the Thule-made BMW OEM bars which stand-off from the paint) and currently use the BMW Touring Bicycle Holder (which Thule also sells as the Criterium). But I'd recommend the BMW fork-mount Racing Bicycle Holder, Thule Sidearm, or any other bike carrier that firmly holds the front bars/fork in-place because with the Touring/Criterium carrier the front bars/fork wobble very noticeably at highway speeds under moderate to gusting winds.
