M4 or Ferrari 360 Modena
I truly love my 2009 135i. Purchased new and avidly followed on Turandot, during its sea voyage to the west coast, I also know it would depreciate fairly quickly; though it is my daily driver and a keeper for awhile. After contemplating an M4 vs ? I decided to plunge into a want that has existed for sometime. This Friday, I am taking delivery of a 2004 Ferrari 360 Modena. I know, it is a bit more than a fully loaded M4, but the car, I believe, is near the end of depreciation and is unbelievable joy to drive.
This post is not to disregard the M4, but with the Dinan Stage 2 on my 135i vs. the incremental advantage with the M4 vs. the emotional (irrational) ownership of the Ferrari, the latter won the day. Being respectful that this is a BMW website, I will only post pictures if there is interest. Otherwise, please visit Ferrari Life if you wish to see the car. Cheers, Rick |

Please remember, this is a car enthusiast forum, before it is anything BMW. We just love all German and Italian cars. Of any make. In fact, If you squint really hard and read bimmerpost from the right to the left, it says welcomeferrari.

I actually thought about a 360 as well. As long has you have the bank for future repairs it is a great car!

The car was a private purchase in Portland area. As for maintenance, the folks at Ferrari Life all indicate that the new mid-engines, 360 Modena and 430 are very robust machines. Mind you, this is an annual bill of $1K and every few years a $3-5K for timing belt and all fluid changes. I will point out that I just did an oil change and inspection on my 135i with 30.1K miles and that set me back $500. It is not as though BMWs are cheap to maintain.
Finally, the M4 is a very nice automobile, which for many, is welcome addition to anyone's garage. In my case, it was the realization of fulfilling a very long desired dream and acting on it. Cheers, Rick |

When ever you worry about the maintenance, just think of you muscles who would have to do the manual labor in the stables without the car, and all is fine again. |

Had pleasure to find one at brands hatch for an experience day. And with the rather aged coach saying "ffflooooooor it" at each apex and physically leaning on me to indicate where he wanted the car to go. Amazing drive and never thought I'd red line a Ferrari coming out of a third gear corner. Awesome car! You'll love it. These things were driven hard and had some miles on them too you know but still drove with the delicacy of an Elise but with a hell of a lot more poke.
Only thing I would say, for all the leather VERY basic inside. The leather paint was worn but then it was full grain below the finish. |

Greetings Cryptic,
First of all apologies to all about pics. I had the car detailed this week and had hoped to do pics this weekend. Being in the NW of US our weather is rather iffy. Please bear with me, images will be posted in the next few weeks. As to comments, I agree. For a 10 year old car, hell not even for a 10 year old car, it amazes me. The difference between going to and from work for the last two days in the 360, then driving my 135i Dinan Stage II surprised me. My first thought was ,"was the engine on?" Then when I hit it to get one the freeway, I was wondering where the horsepower was. Oh, BTW, I am not an aggressive driver, but I find when I am in the Ferrari, people move out of my way or at least speed up. Not the case in the BMW. As I said, this is a BMW site and I love my BMW 135i. After some pictures, I will shut up about it. Cheers, Rick |

my dad had a 360F and yes its a beautiful car, but once warranty is gone, every LITTLE thing having to be done to the car is soooo much money that they are sold for dirt cheap, i know a service for the LSD was 10,000+$$. like wtf? oil changes $3000.
my dad was like dafuq with this and sold his 4 years ago for dirt cheap cuz he was tired of having to deal with getting raped. so on that note why get a 10year old Ferrari with 410hp or so? when you can get a 2015 car with 430hp with warranty etc etc. plus the 360 looks outdated at this point, regardless of how beautiful it looks. |

Uhhh, no. The current E92 M3 is pretty darn neck and neck with the 360. Thus the new M4 will significantly best the 360, light to light, 1/4 mi, canyon runs and at the track, period.

Greetings,
I apologize for the late reply. Business travel and weather have conspired against me. I finally had a chance to take pictures of the car. I have enclosed one. If you wish to see more, I will be happy to comply. Sorry, this website doesn't allow larger images. Cheers, Rick |

In the looks department there is no contest...the 360 wins every time. In terms of driving experience I suspect the 360 will provide a bigger grin because it is more hardcore. |

Looks lovely man, sweet car. Had the pleasure of just a few hours track day in one a few years back, looking at the pic as I write this.
Would the M4 keep up?

Thank you for the kind comments. It is interesting...on the days I drive my 135i I keep wondering if the engine is on; I also push it harder than in than in the past. The car behaves as expected, the six speed manual shifts flawlessly as I accelerate through the gears. As other automotive writers have noted, the Germans have built such a well engineered car, one wonders if the driver is required. When in the Modena, I know I am in a serious sports car. Some observations: When cold, it is like an old man with arthritis. Shifting into second is done with care. The engine is not pushed above 3500 to 4000 rpm until warmed up. First gear is for acceleration so you get out of it as soon as possible. Once warmed up, it is a supple athlete with the ability to accelerate and corner with amazing power. You know you have to be in control or you can get into trouble. Physically, what is hard to appreciate, until you stuff it into the garage, is how wide this car is! Not to mention, I spent a small fortune just to be able to get the car in and out of the driveway with out scraping the front. You can not see where the front ends. Without BMW's much beloved rear distance detection on the 135i, you have very little idea of how close you are to a car, wall, etc. It' s center of gravity is low and cornering in this car is a pure joy.
One other interesting observation, in my BMW, although I am a very polite driver, I do get very rude behavior in traffic. Regrettably, there are very ill behaved BMW owners, and we do suffer for this. When driving in the Modena, I do not tail or flash headlights, but people are very willing to move over and let me go my way. The attention I get with this car is amazing and sometime a little disturbing. As for competing with an M4, good question as it all depends on the criteria. For me, at this point in my life and long term aspirations...I chose well. Cheers, Rick P.S: I do have a couple of other decent photos if there is interest. |
