I'd be interested to hear too. Probably going to install a Pro Clip vent mount for iPhone, need to get wire from there down to armrest and tuck under to access USB. Hopefully the gaps are big enough that with a plastic trim tool I can just separate a bit and shove the wire in but who knows.

Do you guys think BMW sends a manual or instructions to dealers or do the service guys just figure it out as they go? If there's a manual I can get my hands on it from my dealer but assume no such thing exists.

Based on those photos seems fairly similar to my favorite form of birth control, pull and pray Seriously though all looks clip-in.

I did the trim removal on my E92 a few years back. Like you said, you just have start pulling in the right place. If you are not careful you can stress the plastic tabs that are the base for the metal slipons and crack if not break them. Try and pull as straight as possible when doing it. Sometimes the metal slipons don't come out with the piece but remain in the insertion point which is no big deal as you can remove them by hand from there.

It all comes right out with a trim tool. Very simple.
Almost done a piece in carbon.

I just ordered the trim kit and need to find the link with the good write-up. Please post the link if someone finds it. Getting the Alcantara steering wheel and think the Alcantara on the upper dash will match nicely.

I was able to pick up the steering wheel yesterday. Too much work going to to take the time today to do the install. Hopefully by Friday I will put the steering wheel on. Had to break the purchase up, so will wait till after the 25th of April to get the dash trim. Will do some picks of the wheel installed on Friday.

Hate to resurrect a thread, but only finding a 1 series DIY on removing the panels. Had to find something so I can try to wrap them myself.
Unless someone knows of a better, 2 series thread, this is the one I found: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=698981

I ordered the trim kit from a BMW dealership over eBay and installed it pretty quickly on the car. I did not take pictures but I can give a little bit of advice. First go buy a trim puller kit from your local auto store, they are around $10-15 and will save you a lot of heart ache that you might get if you are trying to just pull the trim by hand or with the wrong tool (read metal screw driver).
Anyway, the door pieces all have a little notch that you can look for. It is on the bottom middle of the panel (get down under the panel and look up) and if you just insert the trim puller into it (it looks like a small flat spatula with a narrow tip should be fairly hard plastic) and leverage it the piece pops right off without too much effort. We don't want to force the pieces off and break the plastic clips, they should pop out when the right point is leveraged. That takes care of the four doors. Installing it is simply lining up and pressing the piece back into place. Be wary of the top and bottom of the door trim pieces as they are not just straight push pull clips and you want to make sure you line them up right before applying pressure. That leaves the three pieces on the dash and center console. You will need the trim puller and a torx bit screw driver (I think T-20 or 25 but don't quote me on that) to finish the center console with the iDrive controller. I would take your trim puller, the same one you used to pop off the door handles and just find a spot where you can insert it under the panel with too much work. In my 328 it was right in the middle near the gear shift where the trim pieces came together and left a little tiny gap. I just slid the puller in and twisted. Be sure to have the arm rest in the up position so that it can come free. It should unclip relatively easily. Don't pull too hard because you have to unscrew the iDrive controller from the old panel and install it in the new one. Remove it from the wiring harness before you do this. Also as a side note I used too much force screwing it into the new panel and stripped the hole in the plastic, and broke the head off the screw. This was hand tightening, so just be careful don't let that happen to you. To fix it I had to pull the remaining screw bit out, clean the hole out, and then buy a larger machine screw to put in its place. It looks perfect after installation and no one would be any wiser except me, but doing it right the first time is always better. Guess I am a little ham fisted. Again the reinstall is simple, screw in the iDrive controller to the new panel, re-attach the wiring harness, line it up and press it in place. Finally the vents. I pulled the side vent first. Again it popped right out with little hassle with the trim puller. I then carefully pulled the louvres from the vent. It is all one piece that pops out of the surround, the clips are small and plastic so be careful not to break them when doing this. Again it is a matter of finesse, they will come apart and don't require a great amount of force. Grab the new piece, attach the louvre (for lack of a better term), and push it back into place. Last the big piece of trim that stretches across the dash. This one took more time because I wanted to be careful. I started in the middle and found a few places where I could get the trim puller in behind it and apply leverage, when a couple clips unclasped, I moved to the far right and the thin strip which popped out easily. I then worked by way back across slowly unclipping the entire piece. It should then be attached by the wiring harnesses on the back of the center louvres that go to the hazard light, door locks and air mixing dial. Unclip the wire harnesses and remove the entire louvred section from the middle. Same caveat small plastic clips can easily break be gentle, it comes apart with the right action without too much pressure. Place the louvres into the new center trim and reattach the wiring harness. Line it up and press it into place. All in all it took about thirty minutes for me to complete the entire car. If you need pictures there is a guy who took them while he swapped out his trim here: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=698981 I used his DIY to help start and find the spots to push and pull on. The trim puller I found most useful looked like the one they sell with the Bavsound tool kit blue plastic piece in the middle. http://www.bavsound.com/images/produ...t-for-BMWs.jpg I hope this helps. |
