Hesitation - vanos or throttle adaptations?
I've had a hesitation issue for a few weeks now that seems to get worse. No check engine lights, but the car does buck/hiccup around 3000rpm. It was there before the tune, it was more prevalent after and it seems to be as bad or worse now with the 3 stage. It doesn't happen all the time, but it will usually happen in a lower get at a heavier throttle. Suggestions? I already replaced the air filter, cleaned the MAF and changed the oil.

Likely vanos given your intake is clean. Try replacing the solenoids (with new, not just swapping them, that lasted me all of a couple of days), if that won't solve it then try the vanos motors. The latter solution if from what I read...

CEL came on, and car started to sputter. Rough idle.
Restarted the car and the engine light went off, and the car drove normally - but still have the hesitation/bucking through the RPM range. I'm going to have the cars codes pulled and see what shows up. |

Mine has done this exact thing twice in the past three months. The car would start shuddering under power, idling rough and lose power. Both times it was a bad coil pack and repaired under the 4/50 warranty. This morning it started again.....but I'm at 51k miles so it's on me this time. I'm replacing all six of them this time and keeping the ones bmw replaced as spares. I would like to know what's causing this since my '07 Z4 had the same engine with "zero" issues until I totaled it at 95k miles. Are these coils just prone to failure around 40k miles and up?? Are there any aftermarket ones that are better?? I know I can get the bmw ones cheaper through my sister since she's a service advisor at a local shop and I'll still get the 2 year unlimited mileage warranty with them, but if aftermarket is more reliable if rather go that route.

See if its any hidden codes and this might sound really stupid but readjust your seat to how you sit. It might be how the throttle is applied to the first few gears.

I've just adjusted the seat recently, but this doesn't change anything. It actually make me afraid to push the car, but it will cut in and out at various RPM, though it's always in the same area....

I had mine scanned yesterday after my previous post........misfire in cylinder #5. As I said before, this is the third time in three months this has happened so I had a pretty good idea it was the same problem. As far as where to buy them, it seems to me that they're pretty common on the net for about $40/each.....and this is probably one of the simplest/easiest repairs you can do yourself. lucky for me...my sister is a service advisor at an indi shop. She gets my parts at her cost and they let me work on my vehicles when they're not busy and have a bay open. I decided to replace the remaining four originals since cylinders one and two had already been done recently under the 4/50k warranty. She got them through WorldPac for $27 and some change/each.....Bosch....same brand and part number as the $93 coils at the dealer (her cost through the dealer was $48/each). They're super easy to install but the really awesome thing is that when she called to tell me they had arrived yesterday, from the time it took to leave home and drive there (roughly 30 minutes), one of the techs already had it done for me because he didn't have anything else to do at the time. 30 minutes to replace four coils.......and this would cost about $600+ at the dealer for four coils and labor.
