Winter wheels?

I know it's only spring but it's never too early to start preparing for next winter. It looks like the 2 series has approx the same offsets as the 1 series, so hopefully some of those wheels will fit. For my current VW GTI, I bought ASA aftermarket wheels from Tire Rack, but the finish left a lot to be desired. Within several years, they are all corroded and I had to paint them. When I had my E36 M3, I was able to buy a set of M3 Contour wheels used and never had a problem with them. There look like a lot of people selling used 1 series wheels. For winter, i am thinking 17". I have a 228 MSport coming with standard brakes. Hopefully the 1 series 17" wheels will fit. Thoughts?

Same car on order, so I'll be interested to hear. Never done the winter wheel thing.

I just traded off my 128 for a 228. I plan on keeping my winter set up. Hopefully they will fit on the 228.

Let us know if that works out. Please let us know what size the 128 wheels were.

Was told by Gill at Tire Rack that all 135 setups will work, including 17". He's their resident 1-series expert. You're looking at $190 each for Blizzak, $125-$150 per wheel for Sport Edition (which are very popular and take BMW center caps) and $20 each if you want tire insurance. So figure $1,500 USD delivered.

On the 1 series forum, there are a few people selling BMW wheels. If they are in your area, that might be the way to go. I have aftermarket alloy wheels for my winter tires on a VW GTI, and the finish was not very durable. OEM wheels are much better.

Valid point for sure but consider the cost of replacement if you need to buy a single wheel. Sport Edition with tire protection, destroy a wheel and tire and you can get brand new for $150 shipped straight to your door. I'm going the disposable route simply bc Chicago streets are a disaster. If roads were better I'd absolutely be looking for a nice set of pre owned wheels.
