mtec HID installation

If any of you have done the mtec HID installation, where did you mount the ballast? Inside the light housing? Or did you mount it outside and drill and use a grommet to fill the hole?

Just switched to Sylvania bulbs to see if I can hold back on the HID kit...

You should be able to fit it inside the headlight cover, it'll probably be a better bet to fit it in there then drill a hole and use a rubber gasket.

If it is inside the weathersealed enclosure, is there a need to drill? All of the wiring should be enclosed, no?

There shouldn't be, you should be able to plug the stock H7 connector probably into a adapter cable H7-->9006 then into the ballast, ballast goes to the bulb and you should be able to tuck everything inside, close the cover and snap on the metal bar thing.

Thanks guys. It looks like there are a couple of kits that allow for a direct connect to the ballast without a 9006 adapter. Now I just have to be confident that they will not throw a bulb error.

Do you still work for the company that you referenced in other HID posts?

I'd drill the rear cover and use a grommet to seal it in.

I removed my front bumper today..

I'm in the process of installing a new Aero front bumper and while it's off I thought I would show you how I put in my MTEC hids... I actually used heavy duty velcro to attach the unit to the side in front of the wheel well. They have been there for over a year and have not moved... Not much water gets in that area, but I mounted them up little bit just it case. The kit came with a gromet to go around the headlight wire.. I did have to drill a hole in the cover... but it can be easily plugged if I remove the hids...

Chuck,

Thank you so much for the images! Just out of curiosity, do you get any dash errors on the low beams with the kit installed?

No errors... more

I get no errors at all... I installed mine by pulling back the rubber wheel well... it's very flexible. You just have to remove the 4 plastic pins in the expanding rivets connecting the wheelwell to the front bumper and a couple screws over the wheel. You have to remove the wheel.. The whole job took about 30 minutes... Hope this helps..

You dont even need to remove your fender lining, removing the upper panel in your wheel well should be plenty of access. The ballast is powered by your stock halogen bulb wiring and you can mount the ballast anywhere that is stable and dry. Most people either double sided tape or zip tie it to a support brace.

That is te ballast

That is the ballast mounted in my pictures above. It is very easy.. you simply remove the cover to the back of your light, then pull the headlight wire back. Plug that wire to the ballast. Mount the ballast. New Hid bulbs come with the kit. You have to drill a hole in the cover and run the new bulb wire through it (there is a gromet that seals the hole). Plug that wire into the ballast and your done... no errors.. Just make sure you get the real MTEC hids... it looks like there are some fakes out there. Also, as I remember now, I did the install through the access port in front of the wheel... I had to fold back the wheelwell when I put in the fog lights... Chuck

Great advice & pics! Just purchased the mtec kit and was unsure about the install. Now I think I'm ready!

It gets it's power from the original light sourse (the wire that now connects to your bulb).. no other power is needed... Chuck

just wondering, where did everyone purchase their MTEC HID kits from? Is Ebay the only option? and if so who is a reputable seller?
