How to pop into manual without downshift?
I don't want to dive into a philosophical discussion on why I would want to drive the 8AT in manual while cruising in comfort mode, but the bottom line is that I wanna do some shifting while driving in an unhurried manner. (Just like in a real manual, u don't need to push all the time, right?)
Whenever I push the stick over, the gearbox goes into S mode and more often than not initiates a downshift as if it was preparing me to floor it. To prevent this from happening, I usually up shift with the peddle once first to get into manual mode before pushing the stick over so the the car stays in manual. Short from changing into manual mode while the car is in a standstill, is there a way to initiate manual mode while keeping in the came gear?

Nope, if you move the lever over towards you, it's first and only mode it will initially begin with is S (Sport), unless you shift it with the paddles before hand like you explained you have been doing already. Otherwise, there isn't any alternative. Sport and Manual are shared on the lever, you will always need to need to upshift/downshift to engage manual, so I would do as jacar stated since you are required to shift to engage M. Plus, you will end up being in the same gear either way...

The only way you can do it seamlessly is when cruising along in 8th, press right upshift paddle to go into M8. fomr there you can click shifter over to D/S, but since it is already in manual mode, M8, there is no downshift. Any other time no matter what yo udo it will downshift.

The thing that annoys me the most is that it occurs often but not 100% of the time. It really depends on the combination of speed, rpm and peddle position. I dislike the fact that something MIGHT and not will happen after an control input. I'd much rather it down shifts all the time instead. I wonder whether there's a way to code this issue away or better yet make it behave like M cars: start in manual by default.
