Employment contract

Ok i know this is way off target for a BMW but since everyone else has posted off topics i thought to join in

We have a new contract from work. Im not quite sure if i should just sign it or should i look out for more? reason i ask is some employees have gone back and had theyre contracts altered to some degree but not sure what and not sure where i need to start to see if this will benefit me as theyre not allowed to disclose this information.

Does anyone have any "rules of the thumb" as to what i should make sure i should have in my contract? (Before you say check against my old contract - cant as that was way simple)

cheers

I presume you had a contract before? Why not compare the two?

I find it a bit suspicious that they can't advise what they've gone back to get changed, it seems a bit sneaky to me - i.e. if you are lucky enough to spot something you get it changed but those who don't don't ??!

Read the whole thing obviously and see if there is anything that strikes you as something you are not happy to sign up to.

Then consider what you would want to be in there - notice period ? Salary? Any benefits/terms that you are aware of e.g. bonus, holiday etc.

Have a look at:

http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/..._of_employment

under "What is a contract of employment" - some terms to look for are in there under Express Contract Terms and Implied Contract Terms.

How many of you are affected and if it is more than 20 is your employer going through a proper process of consultation? Has he explained why he needs to change the contract? There must be a sound business need to introduce a change and he has no right to inforce a new contract willy nilly.

This is a very big area and you must study the contract carefully to see if there are any changes like notice period, garden leave, location of work, payment terms, redundancy rights over and above the statutory minimum, hours of work, benefits etc

I might have some info on my PC if so I will send you a pm.

Last year we went through a job modernisation exercise, where every job was 'measured' and regraded appropriately on new salary scales. Not a very nice experience in all honesty. New contracts were issued at the same time.

I have the two contracts but the problem is the first contract is way simple i.e. before the internet policy came out, if your expected to work outside of work hours, that you cant work two jobs etc etc

thanks for the link....

Everyone in the firm. The employer has said its mainly due to not having up-to-date contracts which is why this has been introduced, my contract doesnt seem to mention anything about redundancy unless its worded in a legal fashion but what would i be looking at to accept in this area?

Thanks guys

How many people in the company?

Yes, contracts do have to comply with a minimum legal requirement but the employer has a duty to highlight any material changes that effect your conditions of employment.

Perhaps a starting point is to ask your employer to identify what the differences are and to explain them.

yeah seems to me the onus is on the employer to justify and explain the changes fully.

I'd adive legal advice, or the CBI ?

Why not pist it here, read a few in my time and we might collectively spot something..

Obviously hide any personal bits

You need a heated sofa mate. I have always thought this would be a good idea. If you can get heated seats in a car why not in the house?
