5w 40

anyone know if 5w 40 is ok for use with a 3.0d?

Andy,

You need to see if it meets BMW Long life. I think it should be BMW LL-04

It should be on the side of the bottle

it does indeed. manufacturer recommends 5w 30. is 5w 40 better in any way? will it harm the car to use 5w 40?

They are both the same when cold but the 40W is slightly thicker at high temps but I don't know what that means, in real terms, for the engine

if you're pushing the engine a lot the 5W 40 may be better.
