Question Which Advanced Driving Test / Roadcraft books

Which one is the best: RoSPA, IAM,...?
Other than Roadcraft (latest edition 2013) what other advanced or non advanced books / DVDs / etc do you recommend to advance one's driving skills please?

The best combination would be an advanced driving book (Roadcraft is the "bible") plus a DVD for the theory and then an advanced driving course / day to put all that knowledge into practice! You need good knowledge of The Highway Code as that's the a-b-c / 1-2-3 of driving.

I think any advanced driving course would help, I know people that have gone the ROSPA route and liked it.

As long as it's on the road training (experience) and not just book based then it should be fine.

Depends what you're trying to achieve? If it's a good, safe, road process then Roadcraft is absolutely fine, and IAM and ROSPA teach much the same stuff.

I like the system of road commentary and how it teaches you anticipation and reading the road, but I think it's limited beyond that.

If you want to improve yourself as a performance driver then I'd recommend trying a half day course at the Porsche experience centre. You can useyour own car or a Porsche and the instructors take you round the various tracks there -

Short twisty track, skid pan, low friction surface, and you can explore some of the handling characteristics safely and also learn how to react in a skid etc.

They will also teach a lot more about car dynamics and use of gears and braking for maximal safety whilst driving fast.

I think a course like this is ideal for everyone, but also a good stepping stone to trying a track day.

Practical courses are so much better than reading a book. I can recommend these guys (no connection):

Police Roadcraft 14.99 on IAM website. This book was updated and issued late 2013 so it is bang up to date.

I went down the RoSPA route for the reason that it's an ongoing assessment and reassessment of your driving; if you pass the advanced driving test to bronze or silver level, you are retested after 12 months. I passed at gold level which allows you to start additional training as an assessor to help others.

When I had the time it was really enjoyable, meeting on a Sunday morning and driving around for a few hours, taking in advice from decent drivers and police instructors.

So far as I am aware (and back when I looked at it) IAM was a one off test which determined you could drive well on that day.

I didn't keep it all up and I know the cornering techniques have now changed a bit. This may inspire me to go and buy the new road craft!

IAM

I went IAM route and was impressed. I can't comment on others as I have not had experience of them. I spent 6 months working with my local IAM group which was a lot of weekend driving with an observer who gave constructive comment on my driving. As the test got nearer I had to give a commentary drive for every observed drive and they encouraged you to commentary drive all the time which gets a few strange looks when you are alone in the car.

The test took about 2 hours and was with a Class 1 police driver and he only asked me to commentary drive about 45 mins of the 2 hours. I passed but he still gave me lots of valuable tips and comment throughout and after the drive. Its very different to the normal driving test but without doubt it changes the way you drive. Really glad I did it.

I learnt a lot and it has certainly made me a better driver.
