Average MPG how does it work?

Hi guys - on my 320i the mpg on the dash adjusts continuously as I drive, so it seems to be giving real time MPG?? How do I find the average MPG - via the computer on the nav screen?? Or is the dash MPG actually working out the average. On my 320D it only adjusted the mpg every mile to so....

There is both a running average option and an instantaneous option for display. Cycle through the options for display with the button at the end of the stalk.
