This is an engine not offered in NA, so most on this board will not be familiar with it. I would research it a bit and see if you can find message boards from other makes that run this engine - looks like it was co-developed by BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën, a lot of Citroën cars have it, as seen here:

That engine is also a lot more overworked I'd bet. Ford had problems with their 1.6T engine on the escape, mainly because it was overworked for that application. A diesel engine should be better in a downsized application - more usable torque. Less high end revving range to strain the turbo.

They weren't BMW's in particular but a 13T Hyundai, an upgraded td05-16g Genesis and also 19T turbos. I.'ve always thought of it being normal almost how you see manifold get as red from heat after a nice run.
But that is my 2 cents. |

I've had a 316i service loan car for almost 2 weeks. I'm surprised there's an engine in there at all actually
Next time it goes for a run I'll check the turbo and report back. |

I believe that's normal. Turbos are awesome and scary.
Although on the more powerful models you wouldn't see it as much because you don't need to give it full throttle so much. |

I had the N18 (What they call it in the MINI) in a MINI Cooper S with 184 hp. It got very hot, the fan and water pump was often on when I left the car. Never saw it glow like that though. But I'm not sure I looked either. |

I think you should do a post in the 1-series (F20/F21) forum here as well. There are many more with these engines. I know that one member here called ovekvam he has a 116i M-Sport which he races on track with now and then.

The speed you were driving the the outside temperature are not the most important factors. What's important is how much acceleration did the car undergo. The temperature of the turbo is very high compare to the ambient. 9 degrees or 25 degrees outside doesn't make a difference.
