255 race rubber / PROcede V2.02 track report
Recently, I spent two days wringing the snot out of my E92. Prior to this, I had been running stock wheels and the runflats. Not bad at all for runflats and I was generally posting quite good times.
First, some backgound: Prior to this trip, I had put in an H&R rear sway to neutral out the handling. If anything, the rear sway made it a bit too tail happy and worse, made the wheelspin issue far more prevalent. The inside rear just spews smoke on any turns below 70mph. The day before, I installed PROcede V2.02 Beta. Tires Having corded the shoulders on two sets of fronts and one set of rear (inner edge, surprisingly), I decided to get some proper race rubber. Given the inability to apply power on corner exit, I decided to try to get as much entry/apex speed as possible. With the 225's, any attempts at that would result that in horrendous groaning that we all know as understeer. So the goal was to stuff as much tire in front as possible. With the 255 Victoracer V700s on Kosei K1 17x8.5, I had a mere 4mm left between the inner sidewall and the strut tube. Luckily, deflection didn't cause any rubbing and that 4mm is plenty. Wanting to be able to rotate the tires for longevity, I went for a non-staggered setup all around. You can imagine my fear going from a tail happy 225/255 staggered setup to a 255/255 non-staggered setup! Surprisingly, on track, the non-staggered setup didn't cause the car to excessively rotate. The wheelspin issue wasn't abated, however. The race rubber, as you guys know, allowed me to operate effectively at exquisite slip angles. Even in 80-85 mph large radius hairpins, I was able to accelerate despite overloading the fronts. On street rubber, it would have been an exercise in futility to do anything other than ease off the gas. Also, despite having a lot more tire drag (255 race rubber was equivalent to 275 or 285 street rubber in tread width), I was hitting slightly higher terminal speeds on the straights, probably due to faster exit speeds at the prior corner. PROcede Version 2.02 Of course, the PROcede Version 2.02 didn't hurt on terminal speeds. For the first time, I had virtually no limp issues on track. As you track junkies know, just because something works on the street or drag strip does not mean it can stand up to track abuse. Exhibit #1: oil cooler, lol. Even with cooler, on prior days, I could easily hit 285-290 within two laps. Luckily I didn't go much over it, so I never achieved heat induced limp mode. The autos were finished playing within a few laps, despite having oil coolers. Something about coolant temp issues. With the 70 degree temps, I wasn't hitting over 275. I say "virtually" no limp issues with PROcede because I did limp once. I had been running 96'ish octane the first day, then that night went and filled to 3/4 with pump gas. I intended to go back and get some more racegas to raise octane, but alas the performance shop was closed! First lap around the track and "DING!". I have noticed that when you go high octane, transitioning back to low octane will cause limp modes, even in cruise conditions. The rest of the time was limp-less after the ECU adjusted, so chalk up one limp due to octane reduction. The straights, which I usually see as the boring part between corners, was pretty fun. I was flying by the 997 S and was hanging with older Vipers. The looks of their faces were classic. The power is so smooth and instantaneous. I ran a few laps on stock form and god, the PROcede makes things smoother, in my mind. Smoother and umm, 33% more power without the tailoff at high rpm that plagued the stock setup. I screwed around with taking my dyno chart and applying the gear ratios to determine the optimal shift points. That eeked out a few more mph on the straights. Final Results I'm damn happy with this setup. The inside rear still lights up on all turns below 80mph, but even despite this, here is a list of cars that gave me the beloved point-by in my advanced group. I also posted faster "best" lap times. - C5 Corvette on street rubber. - 997 on race rubber driven by an instructor! He was not a happy camper and didn't let me by for a few laps. My video needs to be edited to remove my choice words, lol. - Dodge Viper on race rubber that would lay waste to me on the straights. We're talking 20-30mph higher terminal speeds! He lay waste to a stock Z06 on the straights. It was blown, obviously. But while he was in the experienced group, he couldn't hang in the corners. I have the video and it's hilarious. Like a rubber band. He'd pull on the straights and I'd be braking mid-corner to avoid slamming his bumper. Very cool guy. He gave me the point-by and later told me he wanted to watch my line because I was clearly outcornering him with an inferior vehicle. (thanks?). But seriously, his vehicle was a beast. I watched an instructor drive it and it lay waste to everything out there. - My greatest accomplishment was holding off an Ariel Atom for 4-5 laps. Earlier in the day, I'd give the point-by anytime I saw it coming up on me. But as I got better at handling race rubber, I got some damn fast times. People were very very surprised with the little Bimmer that could. It was like a rubber band with the Atom also. He'd get within 3-4 car-lengths in the corners but I would slowly pull away on the straights. He never got close enough to necessitate a point-by, as confirmed later. To his credit, he had a passenger. If he was alone, I would have just thrown the finger out soon as I saw him in the rearview. Damn, the season is over already? I'm seriously considering an LSD for next season. With that and some more cajones in some of the wall-graced corners, I think I can eke a few more seconds out. I can't wait to try. |

Great write up! Out of curiosity what kind of oil are you running? Also do you have any coolant additives (water wetter etc)?
Happy to hear v2 2.02 worked well. What would you say the average mph on the course? Also what rpm etc. Trying to get a feel for how "hard on a car" this course was. Definitely sounds like its time for an LSD. Thanks again for the great report!

LSD, maybe more suspension balance work?

Nah, I like the stock suspension. A little floaty now and then, but I don't want to kill the on-road comfort for less than a second on the road course.
I'm sure I can shave more than a few seconds by working on the loose nut on the wheel. |

In the Uk, we're now convinced that anything over stock necessitates that LSD, with procede it's just silly, I'm gonna shred this tyre in under 4 months.
E92Fan is booked in for his quaife and (as soon as i can save up lol) I'm not far behind. SJ |

Very nice write-up. I also thank you for cross-posting this. What was the name of the event, track location?

Excellent Report! Thank you!
BTW what size 255 tires did you get? 255/40/17's? Also, any reason why you went with 17x8.5 wheels instead of 18x8.5? I got 18x8.5 for tracking, but now wonder if I should have gone with 17s?

I went for the 17s because: 1) The rims are cheaper and lighter. At $165 a pop and 16.8 lbs, you can't beat it. 2) The tires are cheaper and more available. 3) The Koseis will fit over the brakes, unlike some 17s. |

leftcoastman, I went on tirerack and they won't let me configure 17" wheels if the car has a sports package. They will if your car doesn't have sports packag. Will your 17' Koseis fit both?

good write up!!! dont see how you could kill a 350bhp Atom in a straightline tho? he exits from the corners must have been wank. You must be a good driver!!
get the vids up, with full ''running commentary'' LOL Carlos

Awesome write up. You can't go wrong with the Kosei K1s... How much do the front OEM 18" weight? I was thinking about also buying the front Kosei K1s set for my car (I already have the rear ones).

1) It isn't the latest and greatest Atom with 350bhp 2) An additional passenger screws his power/weight. 3) His aerodynamics are crap, so above 120mph, he's in the crapper and those front fenders are great lift inducers. Nothing will wake you up like having your steering wheels lift off the ground at high speed! |

Keep in mind, as you probably know, the K1s will not win any beauty contests. They are appliances and they work well for what they are intended for: Light track wheels. |

Leftcoastman,
Great write up, thanks. What kind of track experience do you have? Where did the event take place?

Are you taking pyrometer readings after a couple of hot laps??
