Any thoughts on the head-up display?
I'm really interested in the new M3 and I've been pricing out options. The exec package looks pretty lame, in my view. $4300 and the only option in it which might be useful on a regular basis is the head-up display so I'm likely going to pass on that particular package.
I had a head-up display in my old C6 and after a few months, when the novelty had worn off, I found it distracting and disabled it. What do others think? Have you used one before? Do you like it? |

Personally, I really like the HUD. Maybe you needed to adjust where it sat in your vision. I particularly like that you can change the readout from mph to Km/hr, as I sometimes drive in Canada, and it was particularly useful when I picked my car up in Munich. Almost never look at the dash - I find it a good safety device - keeps your eyes on the road more.

The HUD, and specifically the M HUD is my single favorite option on my car... I'm very glad they are putting it on the M3/M4.... If it's the same as what's on my M5, it's better than the HUD in the base F30 (I have both)

I had the HUD in my F30 M Sport 335i.
At the time, I thought, "I can never live without HUD ever again." After I got my C63, I have yet to find myself missing it. So in a nutshell, yes it is pretty cool. Especially when you're using the navigation system. However, when you're in a performance-driven car such as the M3/M4, the driving experience itself should keep you happy enough. My 2 cents.

It's not necessary, but it's damn useful. I'm sure I could live without it (..after all, my F30 335i was the first car that I've owned with the option), but I don't want to.

On a couple of occasions I've had an F30 loaner with HUD. I thought it was pretty cool, but I also wear polarized sunglasses when I drive and HUD doesn't work very well with polarized sunglasses. I could see it find without the sunglasses but with the sunglasses it was very faint.
I'm probably going to order the Exec Package because it has several things I want, including HUD, but I'd really hate to give up the polarized sunglasses just so I can actually see the HUD.

to be fair, c6 HUD was a joke compared to newer HUD on f10 onward. much better integrated and more useful. is it a necessary? probably not. i would personally take comfort access over HUD lol

The biggest advantage for me would be shift lights on HUD.
I got so used to the shifting lights on my current M3. It's particularly useful in spirited driving and early mornings when the redline is back at 5500, they light up accordingly. But that's E92 where I shift very commonly at 6-7K RPM, is it gonna be the same on F80? Not sure? I may find myself short shifting and not relying much on shift lights. After all, I want the CA, I guess I'm gonna get HUD with it!!

Other guys here seem to like it a lot. I would say, make sure you personally want this feature before you decide it's a must-have based on internet commenters. |

I hated the 80's knight rider style HUD in the C6 Z06. swore up and down never ever get it on a car. After driving a friends M5 hmm that is pretty damn sweet. its useful as all i look at is the tachometer.
I won't be getting exec package but hoping I can twist an arm to get just the hud in the M4 as its going to be needed and utilized extensively if all goes to plan.
