428i acceleration [VIDEO]

So I tried to really test the 428i acceleration after clocking around 1200 miles on the car. I put the car in sport while stationary, then pressed hard on the gas all the way down. The acceleration was slow up to around 2500rpm where it then picked up very quickly. I expected first gear would have more of a kick from stationary.

Is this normal when not using launch control?

Auto I assume? Turn off traction control...buddies car did similar until I turned off traction control...another thing you could try would be put your foot down from about a 7 to 10mph roll...car just jumps forward at that point...

May also be your expectations? Keep in mind it is a 2.0L and it does need to spin the turbo to really get going...

Did you switch to manual shifting and go to 1st gear? If not I believe it'll start out in 2nd gear, though I could be wrong if the Sport puts you in 1st gear at stops.

I did try with TC off and the results were the same

Yes tried that too, started in 1st, same result. Slow build up till turbo kicks in.

It's seems weird because if I remember correctly, on mine, in sport mode from a dead stop it almost feels like dumping the cluch.

My 328i launches immediately and obviously grows stronger as you go up the rev-range like any engine would.

Peak torque is in at 1250rpm and stays flat to 4800rpm.

There is no real turbo lag with the N20 28i and it is a very responsive engine.

I thought launch control involved revving the car to about 3500rpm with your foot on the brake first, then flooring it when you release the brake. You have to get the turbo spinning to get boost...

Yup, but I asked about acceleration when not using LC

Duh...

Well, the reason is in there, I think. The turbos do need to spool up. The lag is not bad with this engine, but things don't start to get interesting until about 2500 rpm, and even better above 4000. It is a lot to expect from a 2.0 four-banger, but I think it does a respectable job.

If you watch this video you'll see what I mean. In first gear, it doesn't launch immediately as you said, rather a gradual climb to around 2k-3k then it goes mental.

Both take offs were pedal to the floor. I'm just curious if this is normal for 1st gear.

Would appreciate feedback from other 428i owners too.

Cheers for the video. That's interesting on two accounts...

The first being the sound! Since when did the N20 28i sound that gruff and beefy? Sounds good.

Secondly, that is strange behaviour. You're saying you launched with your foot to the floor immediately? I can see that it seems dopey below 2500rpm and it doesn't seem like the torque converter fully locks up until then either.

Our torque converters have the ability to lock up from 1100rpm and I barely ever detect mine purposely slipping. Mine would also light up the rears (and it's on the big 255s!) if I had DSC fully off like you do. Unless the road is bone dry and stupidly perfect, my DTC would have a little nibble at the power.

However, as I search around YouTube looking at other 328i's accelerating, I see similar behaviour. I also don't see any traction loss, so it must be the UK's shit roads to blame! This may be the auto transmission's method of preventing excessive traction loss through torque converter slippage as it looks like more load is placed on the engine at ~2300rpm hence why the needle slows down at that point then takes off again.

As an aside, I'd love to hear yours rev out - not heard the 28i making a sound like that before!

What option/package do you have to get to have the "launch control" feature, or is it standard?

I'm in Cali as well.

From my point of view ( a 320d) it looks very good until 2500 then unbelievable until 4000 !

I'll have a 428i in manual in a couple months and i'll try to compare.

Anyway that sound is so good !! It'll make the wait easier !

Thanks, I do love the sound. Of course it's no 35i or M, but for a 2.0 litre I still think it sounds pretty sweet

Yes gas pedal to the floor both times. This could be totally normal, I'm not complaining about the engine, I' just curious if this slow lift off in first gear is normal for this engine. Thanks for your input.

And sure, I'll try to take a few more vids of the exhaust tonight.

As Momo said, I think it's standard on the 4 series.

Having said that, I never see the "flag" that I'm supposed to see in the dash indicating LC is ready. I turn traction control off, stationary, foot hard down on the break, rev to 3000, wait 3 seconds, still don't see a flag icon.

I'm probably missing something or dong something wrong.

I just tried the exact same thing and I have a 435i auto as well.....nothing.

Might not be a feature for BMWNA? Or maybe needed to get the tech package?
