Is your fan loud?

Hey guys,

I have noticed since earlier this winter that my fan makes a noticeable whining/howling noise when I have the fan speed from 2 bars up to like 5 bars.

I have heard the same noise in loaners but somehow I don't recall ever hearing it up until this winter and I had the car all summer and fall. It sounds like the sounds you hear when a window in your house is a bit open and wits windy outside.

Anyone else noticed this?

I'd be interested if you have, and if you want to test it, just listed to the sound of air coming through the vents when the heat is on a mid range speed setting in auto mode or manual mode, and then listen to see if you hear anything like what I described over the sound of the air.

I am pretty sure the noise is there on all speed settings, but on high it is drowned out but he sound of the air coming through the vents and on low it is quiet enough to be drowned out by road noise.

Thanks

I have this. I almost returned it to the dealer because it sounds awful but never got round to it. I very rarely have the fan on full so it hasn't troubled me enough to deal with it. Thinking about it, my car was serviced not long ago so I will try the fan on full later and see if it's still the same.

I suggest you take it back to the dealership and let them hear it.

Mine doesn't make any audible sound that is annoying.

Let us know how it goes!

I've been to 2 dealers...they say it's "normal". Hard to believe considering what we pay for these things...

Mine is annoyingly loud when both A/C is on and fan is high. Will have it looked at when the car goes in for 20K service. No way what I'm hearing is normal.

It is the same (noisy) on all the F30s I've driven. Turn it off. This is the Ultimate Driving Machine, you don't need ventilation.

Pretty sure refinement is somewhere in the equation. Otherwise Vipers would win every year.

Haha, true. At the end of the day, refinement, power and control make a luxury car. The F30 has a good dose of everything, enough to (marginally still) be the crown jewel of the class.

UPDATE: tested it this evening on full and with the windscreen demist on and it was absolutely fine, nice & quiet.

Whether that's because the service helped or something coincidental I don't know but it sounds way better than it did in the summer. Could be something to do with the fact it's winter here and my air con isn't needed to cool the car. Then again I doubt you're running cold air con in Canada right now either!?

I bought a luxury car, not an engine and chassis. I can't believe people are willing to let themselves get short changed because of some fantastical notion about the logo on the hood and trunk.

That's what I was thinking, but given the fact that I have heard it in loaners (even ones newer than my car), I am wondering if it is worth the trouble.

Dude I was being sarcastic, I'm on your side. But most of the ppl on this forum will seriously answer like I did. The want exactly just that, an engine and a chassis. Because of them, BMW gets away with lots of things.
